HMS PRESIDENT TAKES ON THE GREAT RIVER RACE!

This afternoon, a crew from HMS President will take to the Thames for the Great River Race aboard our Thames Cutter, Arthur Tisdall VC.

The Great River Race is one of London’s best maritime events, bringing together hundreds of traditional boats and crews for a 21.6 mile race along the Thames.

For our Ship’s Company, it’s a fantastic opportunity to put teamwork, determination and seamanship into practice on the river we call home.

Our Cutter proudly carries the name of Arthur Tisdall VC, a Royal Naval Division officer awarded the Victoria Cross for extraordinary gallantry at Gallipoli in 1915.

We’ll be proud to fly the White Ensign on the Thames and represent HMS President and the Royal Naval Reserve.

Good luck to the crew – see you on the river!

Over the Summer, HMS President’s Thames Cutter Arthur Tisdall VC took to the water at Richmond for an excellent training session on the river, ahead of London's Great River Race.

The crew included a mix of experienced rowers alongside members taking their first strokes in a cutter. These sessions are a great reminder that rowing is about far more than physical effort, developing leadership, teamwork, communication and trust. Experienced crew shared their knowledge and encouragement, enabling the newer rowers to quickly build confidence and become an effective part of the crew.

With the Great River Race just around the corner, the crew are looking forward to taking on the challenge and putting their training to the test on the Thames. For HMS President, it is also a great opportunity to showcase the teamwork, determination and camaraderie that make cutter rowing such a special part of Royal Navy tradition.

BZ to all involved!

HMS President was delighted to promote three Ship's Company after passing out from their Royal Naval Reserve Phase 1 Alpha training at BRNC. BZ to Midshipmen Alyssa R and Robert F and Surg Lt Cdr Charles G, for their efforts over two challenging weeks.

Pushing themselves repeatedly, they became a real team with reservists from across the country. Highlights included greenskills, leadership and time spent on the river Dart.

A particular well done to Midshipman Robert who won the prize for top overall performance throughout the two weeks!

HMS President Ship's Company marched to HM Tower of London for our Annual Divisions with other units from the London region. The event was also the first official engagement of our Guest of Honour, Cdre Nielsen, as Commander Maritime Reserves, alongside numerous other distinguished guests.

The evening was a great success, with awards and promotions presented to personnel across the participating units.

We were joined by HMS Wildfire, London University Royal Naval Unit and accompanied by the London Area Sea Cadet Band. We were honoured to parade at this iconic venue and are immensely grateful to the Tower of London for hosting us once again.

PO Blackburn reflects on an excellent experience!

“Brilliant to be on parade with HMS President and the Royal Naval Reserve, at the City of London Armed Forces Day Flag Raising, in the hugely historic Guildhall and in front of the Lady Mayor.

It was also a pleasure to be on parade with our fellow naval Privileged Regiment, HMS Queen Elizabeth; and to support all of our friends and colleagues in His Majesty's Submarine Service, celebrating their 125th birthday.

We felt incredibly privileged that our division was reviewed by Rear Admiral Submarines, RAdm Andy Perks, the guest of honour and speaker.”

⚓ Armed Forces Day 2026! ⚓

Ship’s Company from HMS President’s Medway Division had a brilliant time at Historic Dockyard Chatham this weekend, joining the parades, displays and bands as the nation came together to honour everyone who serves.

It was a real privilege to meet so many on the day, from cadets and serving personnel to veterans and their families. Thank you to all who stopped by for a chat, asked about life in the Royal Naval Reserve, and shared your own stories with us.

Days like this are a reminder of what the Armed Forces community is all about: service, pride and the people behind the uniform. If meeting us got you thinking about what you could bring to the team, we'd love to hear from you! There's a place for all sorts of skills and backgrounds in the Reserves, come along to one of our Initial Maritime Reserves Presentation Evenings, pinned at the top of the page.

Huge thanks to Historic Dockyard Chatham and Medway Council for hosting such a memorable day. Until next year!
