🚧⚠ Lower Downs Road Resurfacing🚧⚠

Assuming weather permits, the roadworks will begin on Monday 17th August 2026 and be carried out over three consecutive days between the hours of 8am and 6pm each day, by the Merton Council contractor FM Conway.
This is the full length of the road from it's junction at Kingston Road , through the tunnel and up to the traffic lights at Worple Road.

Pedestrian access will be maintained where possible, but will be limited when machines are working in the tunnel.
Daniel recommends you take a different walk route over the pedestrian bridges instead.

Watch out for parking bays being suspended, please adhere to these as they can and do kick in BEFORE the hours of the CPZ.

There has been a recent increase in antisocial dumping, abandoning waste, and flytipping across Hillside.

Daniel has reported and arranged to be cleared these items over the last few days.

There is no need to fly tip. There are legal ways to dispose of waste.

Merton Council has reintroduced free bulky waste collections https://www.merton.gov.uk/rubbish-and-recycling/bulky-hazardous-and-clinical-waste/furniture-fridges-and-bulky-items

Merton Council also does community pop up tips in each area of Merton a few times per year https://www.merton.gov.uk/rubbish-and-recycling/popuptip which makes it easier for residents to do the right thing closer to home.

You can also take waste to the council tip on Garth Road in Morden.

You can also help keep Hillside, and the wider Wimbledon tidy by reporting problems to the council. Daniel notes that unless items are reported they wont get cleared.

Daniel helped get the one set up on Ridgway by the telephone exchange and these are proving popular with the public.

New fountain on Worple Road? Reported to Thames Water by Suzanne

Local residents have been rightly frustrated by Thames Water in the delays to clean up the sewage spill arising from the storm last week.
Daniel has been regularly in touch with Merton Council's cabinet member who has helpfully sent council teams to clean up Southdown Road, Lower Downs Road, Delamere Road, Ethelbert Road, part Worple Road, and Stanton Road.
Helpfully also sent the flood risk team to Delamere Road to clear some rainwater drains that were blocked.

I'm pleased to say that the council has persuaded Thames Water to do a thorough clean to remove any remaining sewage.

p.s. this letter is being dropped into the roads recently affected.

Overnight thunderstorm and flash flooding alert.

Following the heavy thunderstorm last night there may be localised flash flooding and problems caused by heavy rain.

The council's advice to us is;

"When flooding occurs, it can be confusing who to report incidences to, so we have ensured that Merton’s flooding web page is updated with all the relevant contacts.

Daniel has had a look online and see that there are reports already on both the council's website and Thames Water for Delamere Road which was badly affected overnight. The Thames Water website claims they'll send someone out within 24 hours. The council one doesn't show a timeline but they are aware of this.
