On Aug 14 1996, Solomos Solomou was protesting against the continued Turkish occupation and the brutal killing of his cousin Tasos Isaac, who was murdered by Grey Wolves three days earlier

Solomos attempted to climb a flagpole to remove a Turkish flag from its mast, before being shot by Turkish soldiers

Solomos' killers were identified as the occupying regime's so-called 'Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources' Kenan Akin and 'Chief of Special Forces' Erdal Haciali Emanet, with three others implicated

In 2008, the ECHR found that Solomos' murder had constituted a violation of the European Convention on Human Rights, because he was killed by agents of the Turkish government and Turkey failed to effectively investigate the case
