Two young lives have been lost in local docks this summer. 💙

It’s a heartbreaking reminder that water safety matters even for confident swimmers.

If you get into difficulty in open water, remember Float to Live:

• Tilt your head back
• Keep your ears in the water
• Relax and breathe normally
• Move your hands and feet gently if needed
• Call for help when you can

And if you see someone else in trouble, don’t enter the water yourself — call 999/112 and ask for the Coastguard.

Please share this with your children, teenagers and anyone who spends time around our local docks this summer.

Holiday Water Safety 🌊

Open water isn’t the same as a swimming pool. Whether you’re visiting the beach, a river or a lake this summer, remember to supervise children, check for lifeguards, enter the water slowly and always know the depth before jumping. Swimming lessons help children build confidence and safer habits around water.

We are deeply saddened by the death of Banta Sillah, aged 14, at Millwall Outer Dock.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all the young people affected by this tragedy.

Banta’s death is another urgent reminder that children and teenagers need more than access to swimming. They need practical water-safety knowledge, safe swimming ability and clear guidance about the dangers of docks, rivers and canals.

We would welcome coordinated action across London’s waterside communities, including water-safety education through schools, youth groups and sports clubs, visible safety support at known hotspots, and targeted swimming and survival skills for young people who cannot swim.

Please speak to the young people in your life about open-water safety.

Never enter the water to rescue someone. Call 999, encourage them to float, and throw something that floats if it is safe to do so.

Guidance based on the RNLI’s Float to Live campaign.

Water safety cannot wait.

Summer holidays often mean swimming pools, beaches, rivers, lakes and hotel pools. Before you go away, remember: choose lifeguarded beaches, swim between the red and yellow flags, keep children within arm’s reach, avoid inflatables in open water, check pool depths before jumping in, and practise floating, staying calm and calling for help.

Swimming lessons aren’t just about strokes – they’re about confidence, awareness and staying safer around water. Have a safe, happy summer from all of us at Love to Swim.

Five lessons might seem like a small thing. But when those lessons happen close together, in a small group, with the same instructor in the water – things tend to click. Momentum. Attention. Consistency. Confidence.
