Designed in the 1740s as a pleasure garden for holding intimate garden parties, this hidden valley is now the country's only surviving complete rococo garden.

Painswick Rococo Garden is set in a hidden Cotswold valley and dates from Georgian times. Over the last 30 years it has been restored to its original layout as depicted in a painting dated 1748. The Garden now allows you to step back into the sensual early 18th century, when gardens were becoming theatrical and romantic backdrops for entertaining guests. During the Rococo period, home owners competed amongst themselves to create flamboyant designs and sought to visually surprise their visitors with architecture and vistas rather than the horticultural unusual. Here at Painswick, contemporary follies nestle next to dramatic views and woodland walks. We are particularly proud of our large kitchen garden which was created right in the middle of the original design layout. We grow many forms of heritage fruit and vegetables. The Garden can also offer an unusual and romantic setting for civil weddings and partnership ceremonies. Our cafe serves hot and cold drinks and a delicious range of cakes and ice-creams. We have a free car park and dogs are welcome in the grounds on leads.

The garden is slowly shifting into its autumn palette, with golden leaves, russet tones and softer light transforming familiar views.

There’s something rather lovely about seeing the garden change with the season. Different colours, different textures, different vistas, but still unmistakably Rococo.

Autumn is bringing a beautiful change to the garden, with leaves turning to warmer shades of gold, amber and red 🍂

It's a lovely time to pause and enjoy the season, perhaps with a bowl of homemade soup made with vegetables from our kitchen garden or a sandwich on freshly baked sourdough.

Over in the Bothy, our harvest display celebrates the season's bounty, with Rococo's very own jams, chutneys and honey bringing together the flavours of the garden.

A little autumn warmth, inside and out. 🍁

🎨 SAVE THE DATE · PLEIN AIR 2027

Our annual Plein Air Painting Competition returns to Painswick Rococo Garden in 2027.

A day of painting en plein air in the beautiful surroundings of the Garden, bringing together artists of all levels and styles for a day dedicated to painting in the open air.

Saturday 15 May 2027

Registration opens January 2027.

And there’s more to come… We’ll soon be announcing an exciting Plein Air workshop with renowned artist and plein air specialist Roger Dellar, a regular judge of our Rococo Plein Air Competition.
