We volunteer our time as part of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) and we operate 24 hours a day over 365 days a year.

🐕🌊 International Dog Day 🌊🐕

Today is International Dog Day, so we're celebrating some of the four-legged members of the Coastguard family! 🐾

We love seeing dogs enjoying the coastline, but a day at the beach can bring some serious hazards.

🌊 Around water: Never assume your dog can swim — or even wants to! Waves, currents and cold water can quickly get them into difficulty. If your dog is going near or on the water, a properly fitted dog lifejacket is a great idea and can provide valuable extra protection.

🏖️ On the beach: Be aware of tides, soft sand and areas where your dog could become trapped or cut off.

🧗 Around cliffs: Keep dogs on a lead near cliff edges and steep ground. A dog chasing something or becoming frightened can quickly find itself somewhere it can't get back from.

And remember, if your dog gets into difficulty, don't put yourself at risk trying to rescue it. Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Stay safe, keep them close, and enjoy the coast together. 🐾❤️

Last night we welcomed colleagues from the North East Ambulance Service to HM Coastguard Seahouses station.

The visit gave NEAS personnel the opportunity to learn more about our capabilities, see the equipment we carry, and understand how we can support each other during incidents along the coast and beyond.

Building relationships and understanding each other's capabilities is an important part of effective multi-agency working. When an incident occurs, knowing what resources are available and how we can work together helps us provide the best possible response.

A big thank you to our NEAS colleagues for taking the time to visit us. 🚑🌊

🚨 Incident Response 🚨

Today, HM Coastguard Seahouses was tasked alongside Berwick Coastguard rescue team and Howick Coastguard Rescue Team to reports of persons cut off by the tide.

The RNLI Seahouses Lifeboat Station D-class was also tasked to assist, with teams responding to assess the situation and establish the safest way to assist those involved.

Fortunately, the persons were able to make their own way to safety before further assistance was required.

A good reminder of the importance of checking tide times and allowing plenty of time when exploring our coastline.

If you do find yourself in difficulty, never hesitate to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

🚨 Joint Training Exercise 🚨

Yesterday evening HM Coastguard Seahouses and Howick Coastguard Rescue Team came together for a joint training session.

The scenario involved a simulated tasking requiring the teams to implement a Business Continuity Plan (BCP), including setting up and monitoring backup radio equipment to maintain communications should normal systems become unavailable.

The exercise then moved on to a missing person (MISPER) search, giving both teams the opportunity to practise search techniques, communications and coordination in a realistic scenario.

Joint training like this is vital in keeping our teams operationally ready and ensuring we can continue to work effectively together when it matters.

🌒☀️ SOLAR ECLIPSE – COASTAL SAFETY REMINDER ☀️🌒

This Wednesday evening, 12 August, we’ll be able to see a partial solar eclipse across the UK, with the eclipse taking place between approximately 6pm and 8pm.

We know many people will be heading to the coast to enjoy the spectacle and take photographs — but please remember that the coast can be dangerous, especially when your attention is on the sky rather than your surroundings.

👀 Protect your eyes
• Never look directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse.
• Use proper, certified solar eclipse glasses or a suitable solar viewer.
• Ordinary sunglasses, cameras, binoculars or telescopes are not safe for viewing the Sun.

🌊 Stay safe at the coast
• Keep well back from cliff edges and unstable ground.
• Stay away from the base of cliffs — rockfalls can happen without warning.
• Check the tide times before heading onto beaches or rocks and make sure you won’t be cut off.
• Keep children and dogs close and away from cliff edges and the waterline.
• Take a fully charged mobile phone with you.
• Don’t put yourself at risk for the perfect photograph or selfie.

📱 If you see someone in trouble, or you get into difficulty yourself, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

🚨 Incident🚨

HM Coastguard Seahouses was tasked to reports of lights seen in the water at Beadnell.

Coastguard Rescue Officers attended and established the lights were from divers operating in the area. Contact was made with the divers and confirmed all were safe and well.The incident was confirmed as a false alarm with good intent.

We would always encourage members of the public to report anything they believe may indicate someone is in difficulty. We would much rather investigate a concern than have someone hesitate when help may be needed.

If you see someone in difficulty along the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

🚨 A Busy Day on the Coast 🚨

On Tuesday the team responded to two separate incidents involving people being blown offshore.

The first involved a kayaker who was being blown out to sea. Fortunately, they managed to make their own way safely back to shore. The casualty was wearing a personal flotation device (PFD), and although the RNLI Seahouses Lifeboat Stations D-class lifeboat was requested, it was stood down before launching. The team, having made contact with the kayaker and established they were well, were then stood down.

Later in the day, the team were tasked to a paddleboarder being blown towards the Farne Islands. Thankfully, the casualty had a mobile phone and was able to call for help before being recovered by a passing tour boat.

These incidents are a timely reminder that offshore winds can quickly catch out even experienced water users. If you're heading onto the water, always carry suitable safety equipment, check the weather, wind and tide conditions, and make sure you have a reliable means of calling for help.

If you get into difficulty, or see someone else who may need assistance, never hesitate to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

🚨 MULTI-AGENCY TASKING 🚨

Yesterday, the team was tasked to reports of a casualty who had sustained an ankle injury after falling on rocks north of Seahouses.

The team made their way to the location and made contact with the casualty. Colleagues from the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust provided medical care while Coastguard Rescue Officers assessed the safest method of extraction from the challenging location.

Following assessment, it was decided that assistance from a second team, Berwick Coastguard rescue team, together with the RNLI Seahouses Lifeboat Station inshore lifeboat, would provide the safest and most efficient means of extraction. After a careful carry over the beach to the shoreline, the casualty was transferred to the RNLI D-class lifeboat, which provided a safe and efficient means of extraction.

The casualty was transported to Seahouses Harbour, where they were handed into the care of waiting ambulance crews for onward treatment.

This incident highlights the importance of effective multi-agency working, with HM Coastguard, North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and the RNLI working together to achieve the best possible outcome for the casualty.

We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery.
