The Two- day workshop which was hosted in Ghana at the Tomreik Hotel in Accra was aimed at properly equipping the participants with the requisite skills on disaster reporting, especially on issues of disaster risk reduction (DRR).

Participants were taken through various topics on disaster reporting. It was noted that the two most severe disasters in the West African Sub Region are floods and droughts.

Participants were brought to speed on the fact that response to hazard alone is not enough but the need to identify hazards and find ways to overcome them and involve the communities as well.

Some of the topics taught in the Two-day workshop included: Overview of the Sendai Framework and African Context, Seven Targets: Four Priorities for Action: One Goal, the basics of DRR concepts, the basics of risk, and the links with SDG and co.

Participants made very insightful contributions and were grateful to the sponsors, UNDRR and the resource persons for this all important workshop. Simulation exercises were carried out to properly situate various hazards and how to properly get the headlines and report the stories.

These exercises were aimed at attracting the attention of the listening and reading public and also to engender the interest of the public on matters of disasters. The need for the public to engage in safety measures in a bid to minimize the occurrence of disasters and even if they do occur, mitigate the effects on the affected people was also mapped out during the exercise.

It was noted that Disaster Management was in three phases: Pre-disaster, Disaster and Post-disaster phases.

Participants were tasked to be more involved in Early Warning Systems so as to properly inform and educate the public on disaster issues.
The need to developing a DRR media action plan with national representatives was emphasized.

Participating countries were: Ghana, Gambia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Liberia with resource persons from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania.
