NADMO MARKS WORLD MALARIA DAY WITH FREE SCREENING EXERCISE

As part of activities marking this year’s World Malaria Day, the Health Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service (GHS), organised a free health screening exercise for staff and residents in and around the Ayawaso East community.

The exercise, held at the NADMO Headquarters, attracted hundreds of patrons who were screened for malaria, HIV, cervical cancer, and other health conditions. The initiative aimed to promote early detection and encourage proactive health-seeking behaviour among the public.

In an interview, the Principal Health Director for Ayawaso East, Madam Mavis Fuseini, emphasized the importance of such interventions, noting that many people do not routinely visit health facilities to check their health status.

According to her, the exercise provided beneficiaries with a valuable opportunity to assess their health and receive guidance on disease prevention and management.

Ahead of the screening, the team embarked on a float through the principal streets of Nima and its environs to raise awareness about malaria prevention and the importance of maintaining good health practices.

NADMO SUPPORTS TIDAL WAVES VICTIMS

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), led by the Director General, Major Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon (Rtd), has visited the Fuveme community in the Anlo District following widespread destruction caused by tidal waves that breached the banks of the River Volta.

The incursion of seawater into the river has severely disrupted irrigation activities and led to a decline in fish populations, posing a significant threat to the livelihoods of farmers and fisherfolk in downstream communities.

The NADMO delegation, received by the Volta NADMO Regional Director, Mr. Pascal Agbagba, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Anlo, Hon. Sandra Seyram Kpedor, and the Assemblyman for Fuveme, toured the affected areas and engaged stakeholders on sustainable, long-term solutions to the persistent tidal wave menace.

Addressing residents, Major Dr. Kuyon (Rtd) emphasised the urgency of the situation, noting that seawater intrusion into the River Volta required immediate intervention. He assured the community of the government’s commitment and external stakeholder support.

As part of immediate relief efforts, NADMO distributed essential supplies to support affected households. The items included 400 bags of rice, 350 bags of maize, 200 bags of peas, 150 cartons of cooking oil, 100 packets of soap, and 2,000 mosquito nets.

The delegation also included the Deputy Director General in charge of Operations, Hon. Teddy Addi-Safori, the Deputy Director General in charge of Technical Services, Mr. Ahmed-Rufai Aggudey, the Director of Operations, Col. Lawrence Ahli, the Director of Inspectorate, Mr. Richard Amo-Yartey and the Director of Fires, Mr. Godson Bill Ocloo.
