Ghana Commission for UNESCO Government agency responsible for the coordination of Ghana's contributions to and presence at UNESCO

In furtherance of its primary objectives, the Commission performs the following functions:

• Acts as an advisory body to the government in determining policy with regard to UNESCO and its programmes.

• Serves as a liaison agency involving Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in
UNESCO activities for the advancement of Education, the Sciences, Culture and Communication, with the aim of ad

vancing mutual knowledge and understanding of
UNESCO’s work towards the common welfare of human-kind.

• Disseminates information from and to UNESCO.

• Exchanges information and experiences with its counterparts in Member States of the Organization.

• Fosters close co-operation between state agencies and services, professionals and other associations, universities as well as other centres of research and education in the promotion of UNESCO’s objectives and ideals.

• Co-operates with Government delegations to UNESCO General Conferences and other intergovernmental meetings convened by UNESCO, in the preparation of Ghana’s position papers by preparing the contribution of Government to the work of these meetings.

• Participates in the search for candidates for vacant UNESCO posts financed under the regular programme or from extra-budgetary resources, and in the placement of UNESCO Fellowship holders.

• Participates in the planning and ex*****on of activities entrusted to UNESCO which are undertaken with the assistance of the other sister agencies of the United Nations in Ghana.

🌍 Water. Youth. Culture. Innovation. Peace.

From 19 to 22 May, 2026 at UNESCO will bring together voices and perspectives from across the African continent through a vibrant programme of high-level discussions, youth forums, exhibitions, cinema, literature, fashion and cultural performances.

Organised with the Africa Group, this year’s edition will spotlight key issues shaping Africa’s present and future, from water governance and climate resilience to cultural heritage, digital transformation, sustainable development and youth empowerment.

Throughout the week, policymakers, artists, researchers, civil society representatives, authors and young leaders will come together to exchange ideas, strengthen partnerships and celebrate the diversity, creativity and dynamism of Africa.

2026 will take place from 19 to 22 May at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

Yesterday, the Ghana Commission for UNESCO welcomed its newly inaugurated Executive Committee - sworn in and ready to serve.

Nominated by H.E the President of the Republic of Ghana, and inaugurated by the Hon Minister of Education who also doubles as the Chairperson of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO.

The Committee is mandated to serve as an advisory wing of the Commission with the mandate of advancing UNESCO's pillars of education, science, culture, and communication at the national level.

A proud moment for Ghana's multilateral diplomacy. 🇬🇭

Yesterday, Prof.Osman Tahidu Damba, Secretary-General of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO together with the representative of UNESCO to Ghana, His Excellency Edmond Moukala and the Provost of the College of Education, UG, Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, inaugurated the University of Ghana UNESCO Club UG Chapter under the patronage of the Legon Center for Education, Research and Policy (LECERP).

The ceremony highlighted the significance of establishing platforms that enable young people to actively engage with global challenges and make meaningful contributions to sustainable development.

This is an addition to the existing clubs for UNESCO in tertiary institutions such as Accra College of Education, St. Louis College of Education and Wesley College of Education.
