Creativity on Display: A Fashion Show Featuring 32 Volunteers

A fashion show featuring 32 volunteers was held at the JICA Ghana Office.

A wide variety of outfits were on display, including designs made with locally sourced fabrics, kimono-inspired creations, and stylish ensembles that would not look out of place on the streets of Japan. Each outfit reflected the creativity, individuality, and unique sense of style of its wearer.

Volunteers proudly showcased their outfits in front of the audience, drawing enthusiastic applause and cheers throughout the event. The thoughtful designs, creative styling, and confident presentations brought smiles to the faces of attendees and created a lively and joyful atmosphere.

Some participants wore outfits made from fabrics coordinated within their volunteer groups, while others showcased designs that reflected their own personal ideas and tastes. From vibrant local patterns and colors to elegant and modern styles, the event highlighted a remarkable range of fashion and self-expression.

Following the show, attendees cast their votes for their favorite outfits. With so many impressive and distinctive looks on display, choosing just one favorite was no easy task.

⚾The Journey Continues: Ghana Koshien Tournament 2026

On August 29 and 30, young players from across Ghana gathered in Accra for the Ghana Koshien Tournament after weeks of training and preparation in their respective communities.

The tournament was filled with unforgettable moments.

Volta celebrated its long-awaited first-ever tournament victory, while Tema thrilled the crowd with two consecutive walk-off home runs. Cape Coast bounced back from a heartbreaking opening defeat and demonstrated remarkable resilience to secure an impressive victory in their next game.

This year's champions were Koforidua!

In addition, Dodowa received the Baseballership Award in recognition of their outstanding commitment to the values of Baseballership, both on and off the field.

But the true value of this tournament goes far beyond wins and losses.

Over these two days, we witnessed children who played with determination, encouraged their teammates, cared for their equipment, and never gave up until the final out. We saw friendships deepen, confidence grow, and countless smiles and tears that reflected just how much this experience meant to them.

The memories and Practice gained through baseball will stay with these young players long after the final game. We believe the spirit of Baseballership and the passion for baseball growing in Ghana will continue to inspire the next generation.

The tournament may be over, but the journey continues.

We look forward to seeing even more growth, friendship, and exciting competition at next year's Ghana Koshien Tournament.

We cannot wait to see what stories, challenges, and unforgettable moments the players will create next year.

A heartfelt thank you to all the players, coaches, parents, volunteers, and supporters who made this tournament possible.

【Koforidua | Respect Begins with the Equipment!】

Hello everyone!
My name is Sugiyama, and I am a short-term JICA Volunteer currently based in Koforidua.
One thing that has particularly impressed me during my activities in Koforidua is how carefully the players take care of their baseball equipment.

Before every practice, the players apply oil to their gloves and neatly arrange their bats. Their actions show that the Baseballership® principle of "taking good care of your equipment" has truly taken root among the team. Many of the baseball items used in Ghana have been donated from Japan. In fact, I also sent some of the baseball equipment I used when I was a child to Ghana.
Every piece of equipment sent from Japan carries memories and special feelings from its previous owner. I do not know whether the players are aware of all those stories.
However, when I see them carefully maintaining and respectfully using the limited equipment available to them, I feel that those thoughts and values have been successfully passed on.

This year's team slogan is: "One for All, All for One."
For our team, this means that every player represents the team as a whole. When one teammate makes a mistake, the others step in to support and encourage them. By helping one another and sharing responsibility, they move forward together toward a common goal.
Seeing the players put this spirit into practice both on and off the field has been one of the most rewarding parts of our activities.

We are using the grounds of a local school for our activities. Many students come to watch our practices with great curiosity, eager to see what baseball is all about.

In fact, one of those spectators recently decided to join our practice after saying, "I want to try!" Moments like these make me very happy, as they show how baseball can inspire new participants and create new opportunities for children.

As we prepare for the Ghana Koshien Tournament, we will continue working to create an environment where players can enjoy baseball while growing both on and off the field. We also hope to introduce the joy of baseball to even more children in the community.

On a personal note, I am gradually getting used to life in Koforidua. Although I am still adjusting to some of the local food, Fufu has become my favorite dish. Thanks to the coaches who taught me the best way to enjoy it, I have been enjoying life here even more.

【Cape Coast | Girls Leading the Way!】

Hello everyone!
My name is Yamash*ta, and I am a short-term JICA Volunteer.
We are currently in Cape Coast, a historic city best known for the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cape Coast Castle.
Here, we are supporting a baseball team called the "Ancient Giants," made up of children from two local schools.

The team's slogan is "Building Warriors."
It reflects our hope of developing young people who care for one another, think for themselves, and have the courage to take on new challenges.
1One unique feature of this team is that nearly half of the players are girls. The team also includes both experienced players and complete beginners.

When our activities first began, there was a sense of hesitation among the children. Differences in schools, gender, and baseball experience seemed to create some distance between them. However, after just one week, we have already seen remarkable growth.

Through playing catch, organizing equipment together, and working side by side to clean the field, the players have gradually built teamwork and trust. Today, they encourage one another, interact naturally regardless of gender, and practice together as one team.

One of the most inspiring aspects of our activities has been the leadership shown by the girls. They actively encourage their teammates during practice and play an important role in bringing the team together. Through repeated fundamental training, the players have also made impressive progress in their baseball skills.

Last year, the Ancient Giants received the Baseballership Award at the Ghana Koshien Tournament. However, the team is aiming even higher this year.

After last year's disappointing runner-up finish, this united team has only one goal in mind:
Winning the Ghana Koshien Championship

Akwaaba, Warm Welcome New JICA Volunteers!
【JICA海外協力隊、ようこそガーナへ！】

On 5th August 2026, 6 volunteers (2026-1 batch) safely arrived in Ghana.
Over the next two years, the volunteers will work together with their Ghanaian colleagues in the fields of baseball, school health, community development and agriculture. We are very excited to see what kinds of activities and initiatives will emerge! We wish them great success in their respective fields.

【Ho | From Learner to Leader!】

Hello everyone!
We are Saeki and Horii, short-term JICA Volunteer working in Ho.

Before starting our activities, we paid a courtesy visit to the chief and used the local radio station to announce that we would be introducing baseball and welcomed children to join us.
To our surprise, far more children than we expected came to the field.
The children were especially excited to see and use the baseball equipment we brought from Japan. Every day, the field is filled with smiles, laughter, and enthusiasm.

Among all these experiences, one person who has particularly impressed me is Mr. Nath, a local school teacher.
Mr. Nath had never played baseball before. In fact, when we first met, he did not even know how to hold a baseball properly. However, he was eager to learn and actively participated in every practice session.

Just one week later, he was already teaching children how to grip and throw a baseball correctly.
Seeing his growth reminded me that learning has no age limit. Not only the children, but also the adults are learning and growing together through baseball.

As we prepare for the Ghana Koshien Tournament, I hope to create an environment where children can enjoy baseball while continuing to grow and develop. I also hope that baseball will continue to take root here in Ho.

THE FIRST-EVER FAMILY DAY AT JICA GHANA!

On August 28, JICA Ghana Office proudly hosted its very first Family Day.
The event brought together approximately 80 staff members and their family members.

The main activities of the day were a Stamp Rally and a visit to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR).

During the Stamp Rally, children visited each sector, took part in quizzes, and learned about the work of JICA Ghana office.

At NMIMR, participants toured the research facilities. The visit provided valuable learning opportunities for both children and adults. The visit also provided a valuable opportunity to learn about the long-standing partnership between JICA and NMIMR, which dates back to the Institute’s establishment in 1979, as well as the Institute’s significant contribution to medical research and public health across Africa. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to the staff of NMIMR for warmly welcoming us and sharing their knowledge and experiences.

The event concluded with a lunch gathering, where participants enjoyed good food and strengthened connections with one another.

Through this Family Day, we were reminded of the importance of the support we receive from our families and loved ones every day. The event also helped strengthen the sense of teamwork and community within the Ghana Office.
