Ecomig -Ecowas

Ecomig -Ecowas ECOMIG (ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia) is a regional peace support operation deployed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in January 2017.

ECOMIG remains active, working in collaboration with The Gambia Defence and Security Forces as well as local and international partners to consolidate peace, promote democratic governance, and support long-term reforms. MANDATE OF ECOMIG

2. Provide security for the members of the government and institutions.
3. Facilitate the establishment of c

onfidence between the new authorities and the defense and security forces of the Gambia in order to enable the latter to perform their constitutional duties.

COMMANDING OFFICER GHANCOY 10 PAYS FAMILIARIZATION VISIT TO NIGCOY 11 AT YUNDOM BARRACKS

The Commanding Officer of the Ghanaian Contingent 10 (GHANCOY 10) serving with the ECOWAS Mission in the Gambia (ECOMIG) Lt Col Harrison Joe Bavoke paid a familiarization visit to the Nigerian Contingent 11 (NIGCOY 11) at Yundum Barracks on Tuesday 28 July 2026.

Lt Col Harrison Joe Bavoke stated that the visit was to deepen cooperation and foster greater relationship between the two contingents. He stressed that maintaining a strong working relationship, mutual trust and effective coordination among contingents is essential to the successful discharge of duties under the ECOMIG framework. He noted that GHANCOY10 remains committed to strengthening the existing partnership through continuous engagement, cooperation and the sharing of professional experiences in line with ECOWAS mandate in The Gambia.

The Commanding Officer NIGCOY 11 Lt Col Col Yahaya Mohammed Abdullahi expressed appreciation to CO GANCOY 10 for the visit, describing it as a reflection of the enduring cordial relationship that exists between the contingents. He emphasized that effective collaboration among ECOMIG contingents remains critical to promoting operational synergy, enhancing interoperability and ensuring the successful ex*****on of the mission’s peace support responsibilities.

The visit provided an opportunity for both Commanders to discuss issues of common operational interest and reaffirmed their collective commitment to regional peace, stability and the effective implementation of the ECOWAS mandate in The Gambia.

FORCE COMMANDER ECOMIG PAYS MAIDEN OPERATIONAL VISIT TO NIGERIAN CONTINGENT 11 BASE CAMP ON 24 JULY 2026

The Force Commander, ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), Colonel Aliou Tine, has paid his maiden operational visit to the Nigerian Contingent Base Camp at Yundum Barracks following the assumption of command by Nigerian Company (NIGCOY) 11 on 29 June 2026.

The Force Commander was received on arrival by the Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Yahya Mohammed Abdullahi, alongside officers and soldiers of the contingent. The visit was aimed at officially welcoming the newly deployed Nigerian contingent to the mission area, familiarising himself with the contingent’s operational activities, administrative arrangements, welfare of personnel, and obtaining first hand information on the challenges and projections of the unit. The visit also provided an opportunity for the Force Commander to interact with personnel, assess the condition of facilities within the camp, and issue directives aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness and mission readiness.

Addressing the troops, Colonel Tine commended the officers and soldiers for their exemplary discipline, professionalism, and commitment since their induction into the mission. He urged all personnel to remain united, disciplined, and committed to the successful ex*****on of the ECOMIG mandate, stressing that mutual trust, teamwork, and cohesion remain indispensable to operational success.

The Force Commander further noted that Nigerian troops have continued to distinguish themselves in ECOWAS and United Nations peace support operations through their exceptional professionalism and outstanding performance. He expressed confidence in the ability of the Nigerian Contingent to uphold this enviable tradition throughout its deployment in The Gambia.

Colonel Tine reminded the troops that they serve not only as peacekeepers but also as ambassadors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He therefore charged them to uphold the highest standards of conduct and professionalism. He encouraged the troops to wear the Nigerian flag on their shoulders with pride and honour by remaining disciplined, respectful of the laws and customs of the host nation, and dedicated to the mission. He concluded by wishing all personnel a safe, successful, and rewarding tour of duty.

The Force Commander also held a separate interaction with officers of the contingent, during which he charged them to give their unwavering support and loyalty to the Contingent Commander in order to sustain effective leadership, unity of purpose, and operational efficiency. He reminded the officers that leadership by example is fundamental, as their conduct and professionalism directly influence the soldiers under their command.

Earlier, Lieutenant Colonel Yahya Mohammed Abdullahi briefed the Force Commander on the contingent’s operational activities, administrative arrangements, welfare issues, achievements, challenges, and future projections since assuming command of NIGCOY 11. He reaffirmed the contingent’s commitment to the successful accomplishment of the ECOMIG mandate and expressed appreciation for the Force Commander’s visit and continued support.

Highlights of the visit included an interactive session with officers and soldiers and a guided tour of key facilities within the camp.

NIGERIAN DELEGATION VISITS NIGERIAN CONTINGENT CAMP IN THE GAMBIA, CHARGES TROOPS ON PROFESSIONALISM AND DISCIPLINE

A Nigerian delegation led by Major General TE Gagariga paid an official visit to the Nigerian Contingent at Yundum Barracks, The Gambia, on 22 July 2026. The delegation, which was in The Gambia to attend the 19th African Security Watch Conference, considered it imperative to visit the contingent before departing for Nigeria.

Addressing the officers and soldiers during the visit, Major General Gagariga commended the troops for their commitment to duty and reminded them that they serve not only as peacekeepers but also as ambassadors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He emphasized that their conduct, professionalism, and interactions with the people of the host nation would significantly shape Nigeria’s image and reputation. He therefore urged all personnel to remain disciplined, uphold the highest standards of professionalism, respect constituted authority, and strictly adhere to the Nigerian Armed Forces’ policy on the responsible use of social media.

The senior officer further charged officers to be responsible, accountable, and exemplary in the discharge of their duties, noting that soldiers naturally look up to their officers for leadership and guidance. He stressed that officers must continually demonstrate exemplary discipline, integrity, and character worthy of emulation.

In his remarks, the Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Colonel YM Abdullahi, expressed profound appreciation to Major General Gagariga and his delegation for taking time out of their busy schedule to visit the contingent. He thanked the team leader for the invaluable words of encouragement and professional guidance, assuring the delegation that the Nigerian Contingent would remain committed to professionalism, discipline, and the successful ex*****on of its mandate under the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), while continuing to uphold the honour and prestige of the Nigerian Army and the nation at large.

COMMANDING OFFICER NIGCOY 11 VISITS SENBATT 9 AND GHANCOY 10
Commanding Officer (CO) NIGCOY 11, Lt Col Yahaya Mohammed Abdullahi paid a working visit to SENBATT 9 and GHANCOY 10 Area of Operational Responsibilities at Kafenda and Barra, on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 July 2026 respectively.

The CO was welcomed with a colourful Quarter Guard after which he received comprehensive briefing from Combat Team Commander GHANCOY 10, Lt Col Harrison Joe Bavoke and the Commanding Officer SENBATT 9, Lt Col Daouda Faye in their respective Camps.

The brief included the operational, administrative and logistics states of the Company and Battalion. The CO as part of the visit toured the camps where he inspected key installations and facilities including the Medical Reception Stations (MRS), mechanical transport yard, and accommodation blocks.

ECOMIG GHANCOY 10 DONATES MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO FRARFENNI GENERAL HOSPITAL

In a significant boost to healthcare delivery in the North Bank Region, the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), through Ghana Company 10 (GHANCOY 10), has extended a kind gesture by donating a wide range of essential medical items to Farafenni General Hospital.

The outreach, held on Friday 10 July 2026, saw the team donate assorted medicines such as intravenous (IV) Ciprofloxacin, IV Paracetamol, IV Artesunate for malaria treatment, Tab Atenolol 100MG, Anusol Supp, Labetalol, Salbutamol Nebules, Silicone Foley Catheter, Blood Lancent, and Malaria RDT Kits among others to the hospital, which provides healthcare services to residents of the community.

Leading the donation, the Combat Team Commander, Lt Col Harrison Joe Bavoke said the initiative forms part of the Company’s civil-military activities to support host communities beyond their core security mandate. He noted that over the years, Ghanaian troops under ECOMIG have built a positive relationship with Gambian communities through consistent humanitarian and community-based interventions.

The items were officially received on behalf of the hospital by the Chief Executive Officer Mr Kebba Manneh. He expressed appreciation to the Ghanaian contingent, stressing the importance of the donation to the hospital. He noted that the supplies would go a long way in improving patient care and addressing some of the logistical challenges faced by the facility. He described the donation as timely and impactful, particularly in supporting emergency care and routine medical services.

The initiative further strengthens the cordial relationship between GHANCOY 10 and the people of Farafenni, underscoring the mission’s role in promoting both security and humanitarian support across The Gambia.

Deputy Force Commander bids farewell to ECOMIG SENBATT 9 troops

The Deputy Force Commander of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), Colonel KH Okeniyi, bid farewell to the SENBATT 9 troops during his visit to Kafenda Base on Monday, June 29, 2026.

During his visit, the Deputy Force Commander met with officers and soldiers, commending them for their discipline and exemplary conduct during their mission. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by personnel serving far from their families and encouraged them to remain focused, vigilant, and committed until the mission is successful.

He expressed his gratitude to SENBATT 9 for its continued support of regional peace and security and urged personnel to maintain the cordial relations between ECOMIG, the Gambian security services, and local communities.

The Nigerian Company serving under the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) today, 29 June 2026, conducted a Change of Command Ceremony, during which Lieutenant Colonel Yahaya Mohammed Abdullahi formally assumed command of the Nigerian Contingent 11. The ceremony marked the successful completion of the one year tour of duty of the outgoing Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Agada, who handed over command after leading the Nigerian Contingent 10.

The event symbolised the formal transfer of authority and responsibility from Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Agada to Lieutenant Colonel Yahaya Mohammed Abdullahi, reaffirming the continuity of leadership and the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to the ECOWAS mandate of promoting peace, security, and stability in The Gambia.

In his farewell remarks, Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Agada congratulated his successor on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the contingent with professionalism, dedication, and distinction. He urged all officers and soldiers to accord the new Contingent Commander their unwavering loyalty, cooperation, and support, noting that the success of any commander depends largely on the commitment and discipline of the personnel under his command.

The ceremony was attended by officers and soldiers of the Nigerian contingent, who witnessed the symbolic handover of command, reflecting the professionalism, discipline, and seamless continuity that characterise Nigerian peace support operations.

Following the ceremony, personnel of the outgoing Nigerian Contingent 10 departed The Gambia for Nigeria on Monday, 29 June 2026, having successfully completed their one year peacekeeping mission under the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia.
