Cycle One of the SMC campaign 2026 continues across communities in:

URR:- Jimara, Sandu, Kantora, Wuli East & West
We are currently on Day 4 of the Five Days Campaign.
We are still calling on all parents and caregivers to help protect their children within the age groups of 3 - 59 months from Malaria by taking the SMC medications.

𝐒𝐌𝐂 𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄
The Ministry of Health The Gambia, through the National Malaria Control Program and Partners, has officially start the 1st cycle of Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) Campaign today the 𝟐𝟖𝐭𝐡 of 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 in URR and CRR.
This door-to-door campaign targets children aged 3–59 months specifically in the following districts:

URR: Jimara, Kantora, Wuli East, Wuli West and Sandu
CRR: Niamina Dankunku, Janjanbureh and Lower Saloum

We urge all parents and caregivers in these districts to ensure their children receive the medication as it prevents malaria in them during the high transmission season and helps them stay healthy.

𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒 & 𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐙𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐎𝐍 𝐒𝐌𝐂
In preparation for the upcoming Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) implementation scheduled to commence in August 2026, the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) has completed training sessions for Health Care Workers and Supervisors in the Upper River Region (URR), Central River Region (CRR), Lower River Region (LRR), and West Coast Region (WCR) on the 16th August 2006. The trainings focused on strengthening the technical and operational capacity of health personnel to support effective, high-quality and well-coordinated SMC implementation.
The overall objective of the training was to strengthen participants’ knowledge, competencies and understanding of SMC implementation procedures, including the monitoring, identification and appropriate reporting of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). The training also clarified the roles and responsibilities of different levels of supervision, with emphasis on effective coordination, supportive supervision, adherence to implementation protocols, timely reporting, and prompt response to operational issues to ensure successful campaign delivery.
In addition, sensitization sessions were conducted with opinion leaders across Kombo Central in the West Coast Region on the 17th August 2026 to strengthen community engagement and promote informed acceptance of SMC. The sessions provided community stakeholders with accurate and consistent information on SMC, its implementation, and the importance of community participation. Particular emphasis was placed on equipping opinion leaders with appropriate key messages and establishing effective linkages between communities and the health system for the early identification, reporting and referral of suspected malaria cases and adverse drug reactions. These engagements are expected to strengthen community trust, facilitate timely referrals, and support smooth implementation of the SMC intervention.

𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐌𝐂 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧
The 𝐌𝐨𝐇 through 𝐍𝐌𝐂𝐏 and its 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 has concluded a two days Regional Micro Planning Meetings across the SMC implementing regions (URR, CRR, LRR, WHR2 & WHR1). It brought together programme, regional and facility staff as well as village health workers.
The micro planning process provides a comprehensive overview of implementation activities to ensure effectiveness and efficiency throughout the campaign.
The meetings were success as they facilitate the opportunity for logistics and resource allocation, lessons learnt, way forward and the promotion of Social and Behavioral Change (SBC) to increase its uptake for a successful campaign. The rainy season is here, and it comes with the risk of malaria, especially for children under five years of age. However, there’s good news: 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐒𝐌𝐂) is back to protect your children! From August to December, 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝟑 𝐭𝐨 𝟓𝟗 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬
in 𝐔𝐑𝐑, 𝐂𝐑𝐑, 𝐋𝐑𝐑, 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝟐 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐊𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐨 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 will receive free malaria prevention medication right at your doorstep.
Throughout the campaign period, children will receive malaria prevention medicine once a day for three consecutive days each month. A trained drug distributor will provide the first dose and guide caregivers on how to safely administer the remaining two doses at home. To access this free treatment, simply wait for our community distributors (volunteers) to visit your household.
SMC is your child’s protection against malaria and the utilization of insecticide-treated nets to keep them safe all season long.

Two staff of the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) Omar Jallow and Samuel S. Gomez have just concluded a two weeks Seminar on the Application of Artemisinin in Malaria Control Strategies held in Beijing, China. This training brought together malaria program representatives and other Ministry of Health (MoH) staff from different countries to strengthen technical capacity, share experiences, and explore innovations in artemisinin‑based malaria prevention and treatment. Participants were engaged in practical sessions, field visits, and collaborative discussions aimed at improving therapeutic efficacy, malaria case management and progressive elimination efforts.
This will support the ongoing National Malaria Elimination (NME) Strategies and contributes to high level commitments to Malaria free Gambia.
