Nusrat Senior Secondary School Commerce Club Students Visit the Central Bank of The Gambia!

The Central Bank of The Gambia on Thursday, 30th July 2026, welcomed students from the Nusrat Senior Secondary School Commerce Club on an educational visit designed to deepen their understanding of the country's central banking system and the important role it plays in supporting economic growth and financial stability.

During the visit, the students were introduced to the mandate and core functions of the Central Bank, including the formulation and implementation of monetary policy, the Bank's role in maintaining financial stability, regulating and supervising financial institutions, managing currency issuance, and promoting a safe, sound, and inclusive financial system.

The interactive session provided students with a valuable opportunity to engage with Bank officials, ask questions, and gain practical insights into the operations of the Central Bank and its contribution to the nation's economy. The visit also encouraged greater interest in economics, finance, banking, and public service among the students.

The Central Bank of The Gambia remains committed to promoting financial literacy and supporting educational initiatives that inspire the next generation with a better understanding of the country's financial sector.

The Central Bank of The Gambia (CBG), through its Economics Research Department, successfully hosted a one-day Stakeholder Engagement Workshop on Statistical Data Compilation, Quality, and Use at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre.

The workshop commenced with Welcome Remarks and a Keynote Address by Dr. Foday Joof of the Economics Research Department, CBG, who emphasized that timely, accurate, complete, and consistent data is a strategic national resource that underpins the Bank's integrity and supports sound, evidence-based policymaking. He highlighted the growing importance of quality external sector statistics in guiding monetary and fiscal policy, exchange rate management, investment decisions, and monitoring external vulnerabilities. Dr. Joof also underscored the need for continuous improvements in statistical compilation to align with evolving international standards, including the IMF's new Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual (BPM7), while calling for stronger collaboration among data producers and users.

The workshop featured insightful panel discussions with representatives from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on international data standards, cross-country comparability, capacity building, and the use of statistics in policymaking. Presentations were also delivered by Mr. Lamin L. Dibba of the Gambia Bureau of Statistics on producing official statistics, ensuring data quality, sharing data, and meeting users' needs, alongside contributions from the University of The Gambia and Mrs. Mary P. Mendy, Deputy Director of Customs and Excise at the Gambia Revenue Authority.

The engagement reaffirmed CBG's commitment to strengthening collaboration among data producers and users to enhance the quality, reliability, and use of statistics in support of informed decision-making and sustainable economic development.

The Central Bank of The Gambia today officially launched its Working Paper and Seminar Series (WPS), an initiative designed to promote evidence-based, policy-relevant research and strengthen knowledge sharing for informed policymaking.

The Working Paper and Seminar Series provides a platform for Central Bank staff, local and international researchers, policymakers, academics, and practitioners to present and discuss evidence-based, policy-relevant research on monetary policy, financial stability, fiscal policy, climate finance and broader macroeconomic issues.

The launch brought together senior government officials, representatives of the financial sector, development partners, academia and the media, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering informed dialogue and collaboration in support of sound macroeconomic policymaking and sustainable national development.

The Central Bank of The Gambia has commenced a one week National Payment Systems Strategy Articulation Workshop in Kartong, West Coast Region.

The workshop, led by the Governor of the Central Bank of The Gambia, Hon. Buah Saidy, brings together key stakeholders to develop a strategic roadmap for strengthening the country’s national payment systems and advancing digital financial services.

Delivering the keynote address, the Hon. Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Mr. Lamin Jabbie, underscored the significant benefits of an effective National Payment Systems Strategy, highlighting its role in promoting financial inclusion, enhancing payment efficiency, driving innovation, and supporting the growth of The Gambia’s digital economy.

The week long workshop, which is being facilitated by KPMG Ghana, provides a platform for collaboration among stakeholders to develop a secure, inclusive and resilient national payments system that meets the evolving needs of the country’s financial sector. On Friday, May 22nd, 2026, the Governor of the Central Bank of The Gambia, Honorable Buah Saidy handed over the CBG sponsored and refurbished private ward of the Edward Francis Small Hospital (EFSTH) and two pickup trucks to the Gambia Police Force (GPF).

The refurbished private ward is expected to greatly improve quality delivery of health services in the country while the two pickup trucks will help police carry out routine security patrols around banks and other financial institutions.

The support to both the hospital and the police came through the Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
