The horticulture program of the National Agricultural Research Institute is evaluating six heat-tolerant tomato varieties (AVTO 2116, AVTO 2117, AVTO 2127, AVTO 0301, Padma F1, Platinum 701 F1) and Mongal F1 under rainfed conditions at Yundum. The tomato seeds were sourced from.World Vegetable Center in Benin Republic 🇧🇯 and Platinum 701 and Padma F1 ROOTS project Gambia.

As we are preparing to harvest the first fruits of Hass Avocado variety in The Gambia. The horticulture research program will initiate more systematic research to enhance its knowledge on the crops tropical physiology and productivity.
The Hass variety is a native of East Africa therefore Adaptive Research needs to be conducted to enhance the variety’s adaptation to our environment and climate.

Tomato production is constrained by high temperature, erratic rainfall patterns, declining soil fertility, pests and disease infestation, and limited access to improved technologies. Climate change has further intensified these challenges, resulting in reduced productivity and increased production risks for farmers.
Evaluation of heat-tolerant tomato varieties under rainfed conditions as influenced by different fertiliser types in The Gambia.
Adoption of heat-tolerant varieties offers a promising strategy for sustaining production under increasing temperatures, and appropriate fertiliser sources—organic and inorganic—can improve soil fertility and performance under rainfed conditions. With the support of World Vegetable Center ROOTS project Gambia we are able to secured six heat-tolerant tomato varieties and one local variety.
The tomato seedlings are currently in the nursery at NARI Horticulture Research Program in Yundum.

The National Agricultural Research Institute is screening and evaluating different vegetable crop lines (onion, tomato, and pepper) in Yundum Horticulture Research Station. Tomato, onion, and pepper are the key priority crops in all agricultural developments in blue print in the Gambia, contributing significantly to household nutrition, employment, and income generation. However, the productivity of these crops is often constrained by inadequate quality seeds, especially of improved and adapted varieties.

Therefore, the NARI Horticulture Research Program, in collaboration with the CIRAWA project under the National Seed Secretrate (NSS), is doing these activities to introduce quality and improve vegetable seeds and varieties for a sustainable local seed supply chain. maintaining open-pollinated vegetable seeds will ensure a continuous supply of quality supply chain.
