GIRAV Gives 4 Brand New Vehicles to NAWEC
The Gambia Government-World Bank funded GIRAV project today handed over 4 brand new Toyota Pick Up vehicles to the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) at a brief ceremony held at the CPCU complex in Banjul.
NAWEC is one of the 20 Implementing Partners of the project. The company is leading the implementation of a $23 million investment aimed at improving access to WASH.
Mr. Mamour Alieu Jagne, Coordinator of the GIRAV Project and the CPCU under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security handed over the keys to the vehicles to Mr. Momodou Sompo Ceesay, Deputy Managing Director of NAWEC. The support is aimed at facilitating the movement of NAWEC personnel tasked with the responsibility to implement component 6 of the GIRAV Project which focuses on improving access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
Key Focus Areas
• Rural Water Expansion: Upgrading and expanding reliable potable drinking water and irrigation water supply in underserved rural and peri-urban areas. Already, the project is implementating a D162 million water project is Bansang, CRR South.
• Smart Metering Deployment: Procuring and installing thousands of 12,000 Non-Revenue Water (NRW) smart meters (such as those rolled out in Bansang and Janjanbureh) to reduce infrastructure water loss and improve distribution efficiency.
• WASH Services: Providing sanitation and hygiene facilities in selected rural communities and schools in the rural areas.

GIRAV PSC Meets To Review the 2026 AWP&B Implementation Status Report

The GIRAV Project Steering Committee (PSC) is meeting in Banjul to review the project’s 2026 Annual Work Plan and Budget (AWPB) implementation status report.

Chaired by Ambassador Alhagie Nyangado, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security (MoALFS), the PSC provides policy direction and guidance for effective project implementation.The Meeting is reviewing:
• Minutes of their last meeting, Action Points and maters arising
• Project implementation status report focusing on the following areas:
a) Implementation status of the 2026 AWPB,
b) Disbursement,
c) AWPB ex*****on rate - financial and physical,
d) Key achievements,
e) key implementation challenges, and
f) lessons and recommendations.

The Gambia Inclusive and Resilient Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (GIRAV), is a seven-year USD115.91million intervention supported by a USD108 million grant from the World Bank, Gambian Gov’t (US$4m) and matching grant beneficiaries counterpart contribution (3.91m).

The Project Development Objectives (PDO) are to promote (i) the development of inclusive, resilient, and competitive agricultural value chains, focusing on smallholder farmers and agribusinesses, and (ii) improved water supply and sanitation in project target areas.

Addressing Post-Harvest Loss, Promoting Economic Growth

The Gambia Standards Bureau (TGSB) this afternoon handed over Communications materials on Rice, Maize and Groundnuts to the GIRAV project. All the messages in the materials were derived from National Standards published in the National Gazettes. The Gambia Government-World Bank funded GIRAV project supported the production of the materials as part of ongoing efforts to increase access to international markets for Gambian produce and products.
Mr. Papa Secka, Director General, TGSB, presented the materials to Ambassador Alhagie Nyangado, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security through Mr. Mamour Alieu Jagne, Coordinator of the GIRAV project and the CPCU.
The materials will help raise awareness of extension workers, farmers and food producers along the rice, maize and groundnut value chains to increase:
- Production
- Productivity
- Minimise post-harvest losses
- Incomes of farmers/processors/traders
- Compliance with national and internation food quality and safety standards
- Eligibility to Product Certification (TGSB Certification mark of quality) to access regional and international markets
- Promote socio-economic growth

Happening now at the Lemon Creek Hotel in Bijilo: The GIRAV Project team and the GIRAV Implementing Partners (GIPs) are meeting to review the status of implementation of activities planned in the approved 2026 Annual Work Plan and Budget (AWPB).

The two-day synergy will also discuss progress, challenges and solutions. The meeting will also adopt new activities to be tabled before the Project steering Committee (PSC) chaired by the Permanent secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security (MoALFS) for consideration and approval during their 7th meeting which is scheduled for the 20th August 2026.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Mamour Alieu Jagne, Coordinator of the GIRAV Project and the Central Projects Coordinating Unit (CPCU) of the MoALFS thanked the GIPs for their contributions in project implementation. He noted that the two-day session is an opportunity to reposition the activities of the project to facilitate effective and timely delivery.

“We are now working towards completion [only 28 months to project closure date]. So, we would like to do as much as possible during the next 18months”, he stressed.

Mr. Jagne emphasised the importance of focussing on quality and sustainability in the ex*****on of activities, noting that GIRAV has already impacted on lives and livelihoods and is widely recognized. He challenged the team to redouble their efforts and to prioritize the needs and aspirations of the project target beneficiaries.
He also reminded the meeting of the importance attached to compliance with Environmental and Social Safeguard Instruments of World Bank funded projects including GIRAV.

Mrs. Ramatoulie Hydara sanyang, Director of Operations, GIRAV Project in her welcome remarks also underlined the importance of the meeting.
