PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Public Works has identified an intentionally obstructed culvert along Naki Street in Ordot, Chalan Pago, where tires and rebar were placed within the drainage system.

The obstruction has restricted stormwater flow, contributed to flooding in the area, and resulted in erosion and deterioration affecting the roadway.

DPW reminds the public that culverts and drainage systems must remain free of obstructions to function properly and protect surrounding roads and properties from flooding and erosion.

Motorists and residents are advised to use caution in the area while DPW assesses and addresses the affected roadway and drainage conditions.

DPW crews continue drainage and flood mitigation work with the clearing of the ponding basin along Kopa De Plata Lane in Ypaopao Estates, Dededo.

Routine maintenance of ponding basins helps improve stormwater flow and reduce the potential for flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

Residents and motorists are asked to use caution around the work area, stay clear of heavy equipment, and follow the direction of crews on site.

DPW will continue maintaining drainage infrastructure throughout Guam to help keep our communities safer and more resilient.

In light of recent public discussion regarding Guam’s abandoned vehicle problem, the vehicles pictured are the result of DPW’s ongoing abandoned vehicle operation.

Last week alone, DPW crews collected abandoned vehicles from several locations, including:

- Across from the District Court
- Manibusan Street, Chalan Pago
- Nimitz Hill, Piti
- Across from George Washington High School

These removals are part of a broader effort that has resulted in approximately 500 abandoned vehicles being collected this year from communities throughout Guam. Vehicles are brought to the DPW Compound for processing and crushing.

DPW welcomes additional enforcement efforts against those responsible for illegally abandoning vehicles. Enforcement is an important part of the solution, but so is the broader operation of collection, processing, and proper disposal.

DPW crews completed maintenance activities at the Fatima Ponding Basin as part of ongoing efforts to improve drainage and reduce flooding risks in surrounding areas.

Work included clearing vegetation, removing accumulated debris and sediment, and restoring the basin’s capacity to better collect and manage stormwater during periods of heavy rainfall.

DPW will continue maintaining drainage infrastructure throughout Guam to help strengthen community resilience and reduce flood hazards.

Due to a government-wide Internet connectivity issue, some services at the Department of Public Works are temporarily unavailable.

DPW offices remain open; however, some services may be limited until Internet service is fully restored.

DPW crews continue roadway safety improvements with road striping in the Agueda I Johnston Middle School and crosswalk improvements near Ordot Elementary School.

These efforts help improve roadway visibility and provide safer crossing areas for students and pedestrians.

With the school year underway, motorists are reminded to slow down and watch for children, especially near schools, crosswalks, and active work areas.

DPW crews delivered DPW-constructed bus shelters to locations in Yigo, Tumon, Chalan Pago, and Yona as part of ongoing efforts to restore public infrastructure damaged by Typhoon Sinlaku and Super Typhoon Bavi.

Several bus shelters across the island were damaged or destroyed during the storms, creating a need for replacement facilities to better serve students.

DPW’s Building Maintenance personnel constructed the replacement shelters in-house and crews are continuing delivery and installation efforts at affected locations.

Motorists are asked to use caution around crews and equipment during installation activities.

DPW will continue working to restore damaged public infrastructure and support Guam’s ongoing recovery.

DPW crews completed work at the Sinajana Ponding Basin to improve drainage capacity and reduce the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

Crews are using heavy equipment to clear overgrown vegetation, remove accumulated soil and debris and restore the basin so it can more effectively collect and manage stormwater runoff.

The work is part of DPW’s ongoing flood mitigation and infrastructure maintenance efforts throughout Guam.
