Chargé d’Affaires, Juan-Pablo Valdes, had the honour of representing Canada at the official ceremony commemorating the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday.

From an impressive aerial display by the Indonesian Air Force to stunning traditional outfits reflecting Indonesia’s incredible diversity, the ceremony was a vibrant celebration of Indonesia’s history, unity and national pride. We are proud to have recently participated in the launch of the Renewed Women’s Voice and Leadership (RWVL) program with PEGAS PEKKA, strengthening the leadership, voice, and influence of women across Indonesia. PEGAS PEKKA (Association of Organizers for Ecosystem Changing and Empowerment of Indonesian Women-headed Families) continues the legacy of one of Indonesia’s largest women-led movements, supporting women-headed households and marginalized communities in claiming their rights, accessing leadership opportunities, and being economically empowered.

As a global leader in advancing gender equality, Canada believes lasting change happens when local women’s rights organizations are empowered to lead. Through this renewed partnership, we are investing in grassroots women leaders who are creating stronger, more inclusive, and more resilient communities across Indonesia. Two initiatives, one shared goal: a more resilient and sustainable future for . 🌱

Represented by Chargée d’affaires Alice Birnbaum, Canada joined partners for the groundbreaking of the Manatuto Solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project. Supported through the Canadian Climate and Nature Fund for the Private Sector in Asia (CANPA) and implemented by Asian Development Bank , Timor-Leste’s first private-sector project will strengthen energy security, improve electricity reliability, and support the country’s clean energy transition.

Canada also joined the launch of the Kiwa PRESERVE Project, led by WaterAid, which will help communities improve water and food security, restore ecosystems, and strengthen their resilience to climate change.

Together, these partnerships demonstrate how climate action, sustainable infrastructure, and community-led solutions can deliver meaningful and lasting benefits...

Recently, Senior International Assistance Officers Novi Anggriani and Frances Cosstick visited Central Sulawesi to meet government partners, health providers, and women leaders advancing gender equality and access to health services.

Through BERANI II and SEHAT Programme, Canada supports Indonesia’s efforts to strengthen reproductive health and rights, prevent violence against women and children, and expand access to quality services in remote communities, together with UNFPA Indonesia, UNICEF Indonesia, UN Women Indonesia, and Cowater International.

The visit included joint monitoring activities, discussions on the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, health facility visits, and a dialogue with Solidaritas Perempuan Palu, supported through Canada’s SWOP project.

Canada believes lasting change happens when women’s voices are heard, local leadership is strengthened, and communities are empowered.

What if you could restore mangroves without planting a single tree?

Through the Canada-funded NASCLIM project, the local governments and communities in coastal Kalimantan, together with the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry and GGGI Indonesia, are exploring a different approach to mangrove rehabilitation: restoring ecological conditions so that mangroves can regenerate naturally.

The idea is simple but transformative: effective mangrove rehabilitation is not always about planting new trees—it can also mean creating the conditions for nature to take its course and recover on its own.

As part of his farewell outreach, Ambassador Jess Dutton met with Indonesia’s Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, Arifatul Choiri Fauzi. The Minister expressed her appreciation for Canada’s longstanding partnership with Indonesia in promoting gender equality, including Canada’s support in developing the country’s first National Policy on Gender Mainstreaming in Development in 2000 - an important milestone in our partnership.

Over the years, Canada and Indonesia have worked together to advance women’s rights, prevent violence against women and children, and strengthen women’s economic empowerment. Canada remains proud to work alongside government, civil society, and communities across Indonesia to promote inclusion and equal opportunities for all.
