If you've ever stood in your garden and felt completely overwhelmed, you're not alone.

One of the most common things I hear is:

"I don't know where to start."

My advice?

Stop looking at the whole garden.

Pick one small area and begin there.

One job done is better than ten jobs planned.

What's one thing you'd like to tackle in your garden this week?

My biggest takeaway from Bloom this year wasn't a particular plant.

It wasn't a design trend.

It was the reminder that there is no such thing as the perfect garden.

Every show garden was different.

Every designer approached things differently.

Every space had its own personality.

Sometimes I think we spend too much time worrying about whether we're gardening "properly".

Gardens don't know what's written in gardening books.

They just need to work for the people who use them.

What do you love most about your own garden right now?

I actually think this is one of the biggest mistakes people make with raised beds 😄

When there’s too much bare soil, everything starts looking:
dry
weedy
patchy
disappointing

And people think they’ve failed.

But honestly?
Most raised beds do not need restarting.

They usually just need:
✔ feeding
✔ deeper watering
✔ more growing in them

Fast-growing veg completely changes the feeling of a raised bed very quickly.

Radish, rocket, lettuce, beetroot, dwarf beans and courgettes are all brilliant because they:
✔ grow quickly
✔ cover soil
✔ reduce weeds
✔ give quick wins

And quick wins matter in gardening.

Because confidence is usually the difference between someone continuing… or giving up altogether.

Gardens don’t know what’s written in gardening books 🌱

Have you grown veg successfully before or does it still feel overwhelming?

I wanted to create something slower, calmer and more seasonal at Rockbarton.

Not just gardening classes.

But practical seasonal workshops for people who want to feel more connected to their gardens again — without pressure or perfection.

The workshops are hands-on, relaxed and beginner friendly, with refreshments, planting and practical demonstrations throughout the day.

September — Reset Your Garden For Autumn
October — Spring Bulb Layering & Autumn Containers
November — Winter Containers & Evergreen Texture

Perfect for:
overwhelmed gardeners,
creative people,
beginners,
and anyone craving a slower seasonal rhythm.

Bookings are now open https://rockbarton.digitickets.co.uk/event-tickets/78322?catID=73400&

Gardens don’t know what’s written in gardening books

After years of teaching gardening, I think most people don’t need more information.

They need:
less pressure,
smaller starting points,
and confidence that grows slowly.

This autumn I’m opening the courtyard again for a series of seasonal workshops designed for overwhelmed gardeners who want a calmer, more enjoyable approach to gardening.

Everyone goes home with something similar but different — and that’s part of the magic.

Autumn workshops are now open for booking.

Imagine being able to step outside and cut flowers for your kitchen table… not just once, but all through the summer.

That’s what most people want.

But what they don’t realise is — it’s not about planting more.

It’s about knowing what to do after things start growing.

Simple things like this make all the difference.

Most people aren’t getting it wrong…
they just haven’t been shown how to keep flowers going.

I’ll be going through this step by step in my Grow Your Own Flowers workshop this Saturday 🌿

Showing you exactly what to grow, how to manage it, and how to actually get flowers into the house — not just in the garden.
