Maybe you’re not bad at gardening.

Maybe you just haven’t had someone show you what to do in a way that actually makes sense.

I see this all the time.

People arrive at my workshops saying:

“I don’t know what I’m doing.”

“I’m useless at gardening.”

“Nothing grows for me.”

And then we get outside and actually do something.

A rose gets deadheaded.
A plant gets planted.
Something gets pruned.
Parsley grows

And suddenly it clicks.

You don’t need to know everything before you start gardening.

You start, you have a go, and you learn as you go.

So tell me…

What’s the one thing in your garden you’re not confident doing yet?

Its just soooo tempting.... You see a gorgeous plant, imagine it in your garden and think that’ll sort that corner out.

I’ve done it too.

But sometimes we’re buying plants because we don’t know what the garden is actually missing.

Before you buy anything else.. stop and look at what you already have..
What’s missing?

Structure? Height? Colour? Something for later in the season? Or perhaps you’ve simply got too many individual plants that don’t work together

And if you’re constantly buying plants but still feel like your garden isn’t “there” yet, that might be the bit to look at.

Save this for the next time you’re tempted by the garden centre trolley.

A gardening workshop shouldn't feel like sitting in a classroom being told what you should be doing.

At Rockbarton, we learn by doing.

We have a cuppa, I demonstrate what we're doing step by step, and then you get to have a go yourself.

You can ask questions.
You can get it wrong.
You can try again.

And that's usually when something clicks.

Because my aim isn't for you to leave knowing everything about gardening.

It's for you to leave thinking:

"Actually... I think I can do this."

Everyone goes home with something similar but different — because your garden is yours, and I want you to learn how to make decisions for it.

If you've been thinking about coming to a workshop but wondering whether you'll be "good enough"...

You absolutely don't need to be.

That's rather the point.

🌿 Upcoming workshops are linked in my bio.

Which workshop would you love to come to?

I've been on holidays .. camping holidays, with 5 children, in a tent. all over Ireland. Have taken a ferry to France too... campsites with 5 children... But just realised, I've not been on a plane in 17 years! Mind blown...

If your garden has got to the stage where you don't even know where to start, you're not alone.

Sometimes the problem isn't that you don't care about your garden.

It's that you care so much, and there is SO much to do, that you end up doing nothing.

Don't tackle the whole garden.

Choose one small area.

Clear it. See what's actually there. Decide what needs doing next.

And then stop.

You don't have to transform your garden in a weekend.

This is something I see all the time when I visit people for garden consultations. They often think they need loads of new plants or a complete overhaul, when what they really need is someone to help them make sense of what they already have and give them a practical plan.

If you're feeling stuck and don't know where to begin, my Garden Consultations are designed to help you get that clarity and confidence.

The link to book is in my bio.

3 things to help stop your feeling overwhemed in your garden.

1. Pick a plant, shrub, small area, could even be a pot

2. Does it need dead heading? Take 2 minutes to dead head the old flowers, you might even get more.

3. W**d around the plant, take a few minutes to w**d around the plant. You'll see your shrub, rose much better without the weds surrounding it.

That's it sit back and enjoy your work. Focus on one small area for today.

One of my favourite moments from this summer. 💚

If I'd told the parents these children were grabbing handfuls of vegetables like sweets, I'm not sure they'd have believed me!

Over three weeks they planted seeds, watched them grow, tasted fresh peas and carrots straight from the garden, and then planted their own vegetables and flowers into pots to bring home.

It's amazing what happens when children are part of the growing process. They're curious. They're proud. And they're much more willing to try something they've grown themselves.

Sometimes gardening isn't just about growing plants. It's about growing confidence too. 🌱

Have you ever noticed children are more likely to eat something they've helped grow?
