Abhra Vyas, our Asia Kakehashi student from Indore shares his on-program experience with us. He writes;
“It has been 4 months since our arrival here and although this journey has been rather challenging, I am delighted to have met some wonderful people here in Japan. At school, I was pleased to know that the students were enthusiastic to learn about the Indian culture and India. Of course, breaking the linguistic barrier proved to be a test of times, but the students helped me with learning a few kanjis and in return, I helped them with English.
My host family has been incredibly supportive as well which helped me gain more confidence in myself. Spending time with my host family was the highlight of my exchange since my host family consists of many international students as well. Learning about not just the Japanese culture but a little about other countries as well has been extremely informative. As it is my last month in Japan, I will try my best to make the most of it. These experiences will last a lifetime as each and every moment was a learning opportunity.”

JENESYS program impacted me at the impressionable age of 16 that has made me excel at my education and career.” shares Madhusudan Rao on how the JENESYS program has impacted him.
He further writes, “‘That’s wonderful, Madhu’, said my mother back in 2011 hearing about my selection for the JENESYS Program, by AFS India. The two weeks in Japan transformed me as an individual, made me more structured and interculturally sensitive. While the host family briefly inculcated Japanese cultural values in me, the host school gave a considerable exposure to the Education system of Japan. The serious approach given to varied options of subjects including calligraphy and martial arts along with other Arts and Sciences available for students to explore changed my view on Education.
What is interesting is what happened in my life after I came back from Japan. I had become more confident, outspoken and extremely curious to learn new things. It’s mesmerizing to know how two weeks in a different cultural setting can change one’s life. My education and career options seemed wider as I had met and interacted with participants from fourteen different countries and explored several new fields. Today, connecting the dots, I feel that the reason to pursue my research in cultural studies largely comes from my experience in Japan.”

“I would say that all these amazing memories I made for the time I've been here are different from one another.” writes Aarushi Sengar, participant of Asia Kakehashi Project 2021-22 to Japan.
She further adds, “Moving from dormitory to host family is a different experience. I received a warm welcome from my host family and I got more indulged in Japanese culture than before. From making traditional Japanese food to playing traditional games and trying to talk about everything in a different language is an excellent experience I never thought I would get. I could see the differences in Japanese and Indian culture in depth. I got the opportunity to learn a new language and got to know a lot about the Japanese lifestyle.
My sincerest gratitude to the Government of Japan for giving me this opportunity.”

Tharun S A, our Asia Kakehashi student to Japan shares his amazing experience of adapting to the host culture. Tharun pens;
“I am very thankful for this esteemed scholarship. I feel so gleeful to be a part of the Asia Kakehashi Cultural Exchange Program 2021-22.
The 1st month was a really big challenge for me. I have kind of adapted to these conditions now but I am still learning a lot. I am looking forward to the next few months of my life in Japan. I am also a part of a soccer club. It's like my horizon is increasing gradually. I also have an amazing host family which loves me a lot and I am very happy to be a part of their family.
I am experiencing something new every day. I am very thankful to every single person who has put so much effort into making this program successful. I really hope that at the end of the program I will turn into a new individual and will become a successful Cultural Global Citizen.”
