RADICAL brings into view a moment in Indian art that refused to separate artistic practice from the conditions in which it was produced.

The Radical Painters and Sculptors Association emerged not only as a collective of artists, but as a space where questions of labour, authorship, pedagogy, and the relation between art and the public were worked through. Their work did not position itself in isolation, but remained within the social and political conditions of its time.

The exhibition brings these works back into view after decades as part of a shared field of thinking and making. What appears here is not a closed history, but a set of propositions on how art is produced, circulated, and accessed, and on the role of the artist within a larger social field.

To view these works today is to recognise both their urgency and their distance. The questions they raised do not return unchanged. They persist, transform, and are reworked in the present. In this sense, the exhibition does not resolve the Radical movement, but keeps the conversation open.

Sunil Ashokapuram, artist and executive member of the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, shares his recollection of the Radical Painters and Sculptors Association and their seminal 1989 exhibition at Kozhikode Town Hall.
He places that moment as a substantial turning point in Kerala’s art scene, not only in terms of form or practice, but in how the very image of the artist was rethought.
Through its manifesto and collective engagement, the group’s ideas extended into academic spaces and public discourse, contributing to a wider transformation in how art was made, discussed, and understood in Kerala.

Encountering most of these works for the first time, he describes the exhibition as an inspiring experience, regardless of the medium it works within.
