Update on Relief Efforts for the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake
We would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to all those affected by the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake.
Second Harvest Japan (2HJ) is conducting relief activities in areas affected by the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake. Working in close coordination with local food bank organizations, 2HJ is providing support to ensure that essential food supplies reach those impacted by the
disaster.
The first day of the meal distribution program conducted in partnership with Disaster Relief Group Gorilla was successfully carried out on August 10 at Yatsushiro Municipal Daiyon
Junior High School, a designated evacuation shelter. The meal service is scheduled to continue for 10 days through August 19, with a different menu provided each day.
On August 9, relief supplies were delivered by Food Bank Chikuho, an organization that has collaborated with 2HJ through the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Program funded by the Dormant Deposits Utilization Initiative since FY2021. The supplies included 400 kg
of rice, 30 cases of bottled water, 600 frozen hamburger patties, and 30 bags of meatballs. In addition, 10 kg of mashed potato mix entrusted to us by Food Bank Kansai was also delivered.
The network developed through disaster prevention and mitigation projects implemented across Japan by 2HJ as an operating organization has proven highly valuable in facilitating cooperation among food banks during times of disaster.
Many people attended the meal distribution on August 10, including not only those staying at evacuation shelters but also individuals evacuating at home. Participants shared comments such as, “It was freshly prepared, warm, and very delicious,” and “This was the
first hot meal I’ve had since the earthquake.” Many people also returned for second helpings, reflecting how well the meal was received.
People of all ages, from preschool children to senior citizens, took part in the program. The first day of activities reaffirmed the importance of providing warm meals as a source of comfort and support for those affected by the disaster.
