Laos is setting its sights on becoming a digital investment destination. The government's 2026–2030 investment plan identifies data centres, artificial intelligence, IT, and FinTech as priority sectors, as part of a wider push to diversify the economy away from resource-based projects and attract higher-value, technology-driven investment.

At a recent investment promotion conference, the government outlined their goal of attracting investment that introduces modern technology, creates skilled jobs, and links Lao businesses to regional and international production chains. Data centres are seen as especially promising, with Laos's hydropower and growing solar and wind capacity offering a strong energy advantage for power-hungry digital infrastructure, a timely opportunity given that global data centre investment topped US$270 billion in 2025.
Investment activity is already accelerating: in the first seven months of 2026, approved projects reached US$8.5 billion, up 68% year-on-year.

This signals a genuine shift in Laos's investment identity, one where energy and digital infrastructure increasingly go hand in hand. As the government tightens investor selection criteria around capital, technical capacity, and experience, Australian companies with strong track records in clean energy and digital infrastructure are well placed to be seen as credible, high-quality partners. This is also a moment to think about workforce development partnerships, echoing the government's own emphasis on technology transfer and skills-building.

Great energy in Vientiane as members of the Australian community turned out to cheer on the Young Socceroos during their AFC U20 Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers campaign! 🎉
The Australian Ambassador to Lao PDR Megan Jones, the Second Secretary for Trade & Investment, Mike Riera, along with AustCham's Vice President Alex Cameron, Board Director Brendon Bangma, and former Executive Director Olly, were all in attendance to cheer on the Young Socceroos. This was a great show of unity between Australia's diplomatic and business community here in Laos.

Moments like these go beyond sport. They reflect the depth of the Australia-Laos relationship, and one that spans trade, education, diplomacy, and now, shared enthusiasm on the football pitch. It's a reminder of just how connected and active our community is, showing up together to support Australian talent and strengthen ties here in Laos.

On Wednesday, 26 August, AustCham members and friends gathered at Westbridge Institute of Business and Technology, the newest member of the Sengsavanh Education Group, for our August Sundowner, hosted right on their campus in Sisavath Village, Chanthabouly District.

Guests learned about Westbridge's UK-accredited qualifications and international university pathways, and explored real opportunities to connect with the next generation of Lao talent from internships and graduate recruitment to guest lectures, industry projects, and longer-term skills partnerships.
Of course, no Sundowner is complete without good food and company guests enjoyed a spread from Demi Cafe alongside free-flow Beer Lao, wine, and soft drinks, as new connections were made across sectors.

Online sessions began recently, kicking off a five-week program running from 13 August to 10 September. Participants are exploring topics such as the paradox of climate journalism, data visualisation for climate change, and social media self-defence with sessions delivered by the eSafety Commission and guest speakers from ClimateWorks Centre, the ABC Climate Change team, the Monash Climate Communication Hub, and ABCID's Pacific Prepared program.

The program is delivered by ABCID with support from the Australian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and its ASEAN-Australia Centre. It is a strong example of Australia's ongoing investment in media capacity and climate communication across the region.
For AustCham members, initiatives like this reflect the broader value Australia brings to Laos beyond trade and investment: building skilled, regionally connected professionals who help shape informed public discourse including on issues like climate risk and sustainability that increasingly matter to business.
