This afternoon, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economy and Industry, Public Administration and Planning, led by the Deputy Chairperson, Honourable Hilma Iita, paid a courtesy visit to the Governor of the Omaheke Region, Honourable Pijoo Nganate.

The courtesy call and briefing formed part of the Committee’s engagement ahead of the public hearing on the motion titled, “Whether the existing laws are truly protecting Namibians from exploitation by lending institutions and informal money lenders,” scheduled to take place tomorrow, 12 August 2026, from 09h00 to 13h00 and 14h30 to 17h00 at the Omaheke Regional Council Chamber.

During the engagement, the Governor encouraged the Committee to consider legislation that is responsive to the realities faced by ordinary Namibians, emphasising the need for laws that can meaningfully change people’s lives and reduce unnecessary bureaucratic barriers.

Honourable Iita reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to ensuring that the voices and experiences of ordinary Namibians are heard, noting that the public hearing provides an important platform for communities and stakeholders to share their concerns and contribute to the legislative process.

Chairperson of the Omaheke Regional Council, Honourable Rocco Nguvauva, further encouraged the Committee to consider the issue of virgin land that remains unproductive, as well as concerns surrounding the mushrooming of cash loan schemes amid stagnant salaries and the increasing cost of living.

The public hearing is open to civil servants, borrowers, employers and workers, trade unions, micro-lenders and SMEs, the private sector, and civil society, who are encouraged to attend and actively participate in the engagement.

CHOPPIES GOBABIS OPEN | This morning, Honourable Pijoo Nganate, Governor of the Omaheke Region, joined Mr. Ramachandran Ottapathu, Chief Executive Officer of Choppies; Mr. Stefan Weydeman, Head Office Manager; His Worship Elvin Gariseb, Mayor of Gobabis; and members of the community for the official opening of Choppies Gobabis.

In his remarks, the Governor stressed that every new investment should create lasting opportunities for people and communities through job creation, local enterprise, and economic growth. He also welcomed the fact that 32 local residents have been employed thus far, with the majority of the positions filled by previously unemployed young people.

Mr. Weydeman reaffirmed Choppies’ commitment to investing in Gobabis and supporting local communities. He encouraged farmers and local producers to partner with Choppies by supplying locally produced goods.

The store will operate daily until 8:00 p.m.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health, Social Welfare and Labour affairs this morning paid a courtesy call to the Office of the Omaheke Region.

Regional Governor, Pijoo Nganate suggest to the committee to advocate for a stipend for the unemployed care givers to Those with disabilities

Nganate also raises concern about aged old age homes and says there is need for change in how we handle matters affecting the Namibian people. He uttered this while acknowledging the facelift done to the Environment Epako old age facility.

He further says in instances where the challenges are known, parliamentarians must act and not just rally with consultations and reducing themselves to research.

Chairperson of the committee Joseph Sikongo says the use of va**ng, use of drugs, hubbly-bubbly is real and worrisome.

Expressed disappointment especially because the education act disempower teachers to discipline learners citing the cumbersome process it takes to teach a decision on how an offending learner should be disciplined.

In the end the Governor said the use of the concerned substances is not limited to learners but adults including Medical Doctors, teachers and others.

He thus says it is indeed worrisome that those entrusted with the teaching of the Namibian child are equally intoxicated to an extent.

Electronic Identification Initiative coming soon| Earlier this morning, the Governor of the Omaheke Region received a courtesy visit from a delegation led by the Deputy Executive Director of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration, Mr. Jackson Wandjiva. The delegation included representatives from the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), various media houses and Electronic Identification Initiative (E-ID) Brand Ambassadors.

The purpose of the visit was to brief the Governor on Namibia's forthcoming E-ID initiative, a Cabinet-approved initiative that will be rolled out nationally in September 2026. The delegation is currently conducting a public awareness campaign across the region until 5 August 2026 to sensitise communities on the new initiative and its benefits.

The E-ID is a physical smart card embedded with a chip that will simplify identification and improve access to information, which will enable for easier planning and and service delivery. The system is designed with strong privacy safeguards, allowing citizens to determine which personal information may be shared and to consent or deny access to authorised users. Citizens will also be able to view when and by whom their information has been accessed.

The initiative is being implemented through a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration, CRAN, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), and other key stakeholders. The information will be securely stored under the Office of the Prime Minister and remain the property of the Government of the Republic of Namibia.

During the engagement, the Governor welcomed the initiative and underscored the importance of decentralising Home Affairs services to improve accessibility and ensure faster, more efficient service delivery for the people of the Omaheke Region and the greater Namibia.

COURTESY CALL DBN| This morning, the Governor of the Omaheke Region, Honourable Pijoo Nganate, received a courtesy visit from the Chief Executive Officer of the Development Bank of Namibia (DBN), Mr Titus Ndove, accompanied by members of the DBN Board and staff.

The courtesy call precedes an open engagement session with the business community, which is scheduled to take place this afternoon at 17:30 at the Nossobville Community Hall.

Youth are encouraged to attend and engage with representatives about the Youth Development Fund.
