Gerhard Ndafenongo, the Otjozondjupa regional director of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, has urged for the establishment of small heritage sites in Otjiwarongo with the proposal to seeks leverage local tourism and cultural pride to boost the town's economic growth.

‘‘Otjiwarongo is one of the strategic towns. Here every week we have people from other towns doing workshops. We have such wonderful heritage that we can set up here in our town and we can invite people,’’ said Ndafenongo.

He said this on Monday, 14 September 2026, while delivering his message on the importance of Namibian Heritage Week celebration during the official opening day in Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa region.

Speaking at the official opening of the Namibian Heritage week held under the theme ‘‘Okupwika Ovirumatwa Vyombazu Yetu Nga Maylaseka Koronditona’’, which translates to ‘‘Preserving Heritage for the Next Generation’’ in Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa region on 14 September 2026, Governor of the Otjozondjupa region, Hon. John //Khamuseb highlighted that heritage is the bridge between our past, present and future.

‘‘Heritage is not merely something we remember from the past, heritage is the bridge between our past, in present, in our future. It tell us who we are, where we come from, what our forefathers and foremothers valued and what we must pass on to those who will come after us,’’ said //Khamuseb.

The Namibian Heritage Week celebration intends to celebrate Namibia’s rich and diverse heritage, promote the safeguarding and protection of all cultural heritage in Namibia, irrespective of religious or ethnic identity, and recognise that all forms of cultural heritage in Namibia are valued as social and economic assets.

Better roads ahead for Otjiwarongo motorists

OTJIWARONGO – A major road rehabilitation programme worth N$81.22 million is set to improve road safety, traffic flow and connectivity in Otjiwarongo, with work on the C38 road now officially handed over to the contractor.

The C38 rehabilitation project was handed over during a ceremony held opposite the Otjiwarongo Cemetery. The road forms part of the important route connecting Otjiwarongo with Kalfeld and continues towards Outjo.

The project is a partnership between the Otjiwarongo Municipality, Roads Authority (RA) and Road Fund Administration (RFA), with the C38 works being the first phase of a wider road infrastructure programme extending into the 2027/28 financial year.

Speaking at the handover, Otjiwarongo Municipality Chief Executive Officer Mberipura Hifitikeko said the Municipality will facilitate procurement, while the RFA will provide ring-fenced funding and the RA will provide technical oversight.

The rehabilitation will be carried out by China Henan International Cooperation (CHICO), which will use stabilised material technology intended to make construction more time-efficient.

According to Paulus Shalongo of Element Consulting Engineers, the rehabilitation is expected to improve road safety and traffic flow along the C38.

The wider programme consists of three lots:

🔹 Lot 1: Resurfacing of the B1 and C38 routes
🔹 Lot 2: Rehabilitation of the C38 single carriageway
🔹 Lot 3: Rehabilitation of the B1 and C38 dual carriageway

The C38 is an important regional connection between Otjiwarongo and Outjo, making the project significant for motorists, businesses and communities that rely on the route.

Namibian Heritage Week celebrates our identity

OTJIWARONGO – Namibia is celebrating Namibian Heritage Week from 14 to 20 September 2026 under the theme “Okupwika Ovirumatwa Vyombazu Yetu nga Kozonditona Zoruyaveze” (Preserving Heritage for Future Generations).

The celebrations in the Otjozondjupa Region are taking place at the Museum of Namibian Fashion in Otjiwarongo, highlighting the importance of preserving Namibia’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

Delivering the keynote speech, Otjozondjupa Governor Julius ǁKhamuseb described heritage as a bridge connecting the past, present and future.

“A nation that loses its heritage loses an important part of its identity,” said ǁKhamuseb.

Heritage lives through our traditions, stories, languages, music, dance, arts, crafts, food and traditional knowledge passed from one generation to another.

As Namibia celebrates Heritage Week, communities are encouraged to take pride in their heritage and play their part in preserving it for future generations.

Namibia held a National Prayer Day to seek devine intervention on behavioural change, help save lives against social ills such gender-based violence, road safety and su***de prevention.

OTJIWARONGO: The Otjiwarongo Constituency Office is taking practical steps to connect local job seekers with employment opportunities following Otjozondjupa Governor Julius ǁKhamuseb’s call for companies to help absorb unemployed youth.

The office has compiled a database of 430 skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled job seekers who are looking for employment opportunities.

Constituency Councillor Paulus Nekundi said the initiative is aimed at creating a more organised way of linking local job seekers with potential employers.

“What we are proposing is the creation of a database to streamline the process, similar to what we implemented in Kalkfeld, making it a constituency-wide initiative,” Nekundi said.

The database will give companies access to a pool of local talent while helping the constituency office better understand the skills available within the community. Businesses, government agencies and construction companies are encouraged to make use of the database when vacancies arise and consider local candidates for available opportunities.

DISASTER RISK REDUCTION | The Office of the Prime Minister OPM_Namibia commenced a two-day National Validation Workshop on the revised National Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Policy in Otjiwarongo, today.

The process comes after a review of the existing National Disaster Risk Management Policy and Framework which was last revised in 2009, recognising that Namibia’s disaster risk landscape continues to evolve and requires policies that are responsive to emerging challenges and aligned with both national priorities and international commitments.

At the heart of the revised policy is a stronger approach to coordination, accountability, financing and oversight, while ensuring that disaster risk reduction becomes an integral part of Namibia’s national development planning.

The workshop brings together stakeholders to scrutinise the draft, share perspectives and strengthen the policy before its finalisation.

Otjozondjupa Regional Governor, Hon. John //Khamuseb says new and emerging products and devices including vapes, electronic ci******es, hubbly-bubbly, ho**ah pipes, and heated to***co products, ni****ne pouches and other evolving products are increasingly available and attractive to young people.

He said young people require stronger protection from products designed to create and sustain ni****ne dependence.

The Governor said this on Wednesday during the national consultation workshop to review the To***co Product Control Act no.1 of 2010, held by the Ministry of Health and Social Services in Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa region.

The review intends to strengthen Namibia’s to***co-control legislation, regulate emerging to***co and ni****ne products and align the Act with the World Health Organisation Framework Convention on To***co Control (WHO FCTC).
