🔎 Why does research matter?
We asked one of our previous Forskerfokus speakers to tell us more about his research into inclusive teaching — what inspired it, what he has learned, and what he hopes it will change.
By sharing the stories behind the research, we want to give you a glimpse into the questions UiA researchers are exploring — and how their work can make a difference beyond the university.
Why did you choose your research topic?
Inclusive teaching practices interest me a great deal. After hearing the story of a former student of mine who had had less-than-exemplary experiences during parts of her earlier education, I did a deep dive into the literature on the distinction between narrow and broad understandings of adapted teaching. When I learned that a relevant case was underway in our department, I jumped at the opportunity to study it.
What inspired or motivated your work?
My main motivation was twofold. First, I believed it was important for students with disabilities to receive the best possible education. Second, I assumed that having such students in the classroom and including them meaningfully would add value for the other students. That they would not only receive what they should, but something more.
What do you hope your research will achieve?
I hope it challenges people's assumptions and encourages them to think differently about how they adapt their teaching, viewing challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles.
