POV: Living in Greece for a student exchange. In case you missed it, Ilaria took us bts of her life in Greece. Living and studying in Greece means turning ancient history into my daily commute! We are so glad Ilaria is having a great time.

Picture this: It’s a lazy weekend morning, you’re hanging out with a hot drink, and sharing a laugh with your family. Now imagine adding a student from halfway across the world to that moment, learning about their life, sharing yours, and seeing your everyday routines through fresh, curious eyes.

We have 6 weeks left to find volunteer host families for our incoming January arrivals!

To everyone who has already signed up or shared our posts, thank you so much.

👉 Do you have room for one more at your table? Browse host profiles on our website. We promise it’s an experience your family will never forget.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend! 💙

Ever studied Classical Studies or ancient history in school?

Here are our top exchange destinations for lovers of Classical Antiquity:

🇮🇹 Italy: Helena loved visiting from the ruins of the Roman Empire
🇬🇷 Greece: People like Manawa have explored ancient towns, and experienced Greek hospitality (philoxenia)
🇹🇷 Türkiye: AFS scholars like Tim have wandered around centuries of Greco-Roman and Byzantine heritage
🇪🇬 Egypt: Afshah stood before the Pyramids of Giza and haggled in the markets of one of the oldest cultures on Earth
🇪🇸 Spain: Many AFSers have lived and studied in vibrant cities filled with ancient Roman aqueducts, amphitheatres, and rich Mediterranean culture!

Living abroad brings history to life, transforming textbook lessons into a genuine understanding of everyday culture.

Our community events are always so invigorating! Last week in Auckland, our community came together for a lovely arvo connecting soon-to-depart AFS students, hosted international students, host whānau, staff, and volunteers.

Moments like these remind us why cross cultural exchange matters so deeply, when casual conversations turn into connections over shared kai and shared stories.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this Auckland gathering so special!

“The person is not your family when they get there, but they become part of your family before they leave.”

"it’s about creating lifelong connections, embracing new cultures, and giving young people experiences that will shape them for years to come. What an incredible journey it has been so far!”

-Recent AFS host families, who hosted students from Japan, Indonesia, Italy plus! Thank you so much for your hospitality, joy and warmth.
