Guess who’s coming to town? 👀

Shaun the Sheep is officially on his way to Christchurch and should be arriving later this month. And honestly… we’re pretty ewe-cited. 😂

We’re stoked to be the Presenting Partner of the BIG Sheep Trail, coming to Christchurch in early 2027.

The trail will bring 60 Shaun the Sheep sculptures to the city for 10 weeks, helping to raise funds for our long-time friends at Big Brothers Big Sisters ChCh

It’s Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori!

We’re having a bit of fun sharing the te reo names for a few of our animals here at Willowbank.

We’ve also got a special te reo Māori designed map at our ticketing counter to help you discover more of our animals and their te reo names.

Plus, today we’re joined by Te Wānanga o Aotearoa for a special activation. Have a go at a simple te reo challenge, learn a new phrase and you could score a koha from the team.

In November of last year, an adult female Roroa, great spotted kiwi had really got herself in a bit of a pickle...

She was originally brought to our friends at the South Island Wildlife Hospital underweight and with an injured bill, before coming into our care at Willowbank to continue her recovery. Given the situation, she soon gained the very fitting nickname: Pickle.

And it’s certainly been a team effort. The staff at the South Island Wildlife Hospital and our own team have put countless hours into helping Pickle recover, regain weight and get ready for life back in the wild.

She’s needed time for her injured bill to heal and to build her weight back up, while her diet is now being carefully transitioned towards a ‘wild diet’ of invertebrates she’ll need to find for herself.

After months of care, we’re getting closer to the best part of the story: seeing this Roroa return home to the wild on the West Coast early next week.

We were honoured to welcome Sir Ian McKellen to Willowbank on Friday, where he got a behind-the-scenes look at some of the conservation work happening here.

During his visit, Sir Ian witnessed a routine health check of one of the kiwi pukupuku (little spotted kiwi) in our care, as well as a health check on an eight-year-old tuatara.

These routine checks are an important part of the work we do to care for taonga species, monitor their health and support their conservation for the future.

It was a privilege to share a little of this work with Sir Ian and give him an insight into the role Willowbank plays in protecting Aotearoa’s native wildlife.

He's on his way 🛳 How baarilliant!

We've just heard from Shaun, he's steadily making his way downunder, ready to be blinged out by our amazing artists.

Currently he's south of Singapore in the South China Sea and expects to make New Zealand shores and pass customs early to mid September.

Guess we need to get on with that welcome banner... what should we write? 🪧
