This spring, kids can become Junior Rangers at The OPERA by exploring our private eco-reserve, completing conservation missions and discovering how rangers help protect native wildlife and their habitats.

At the end of their adventures, each young explorer will receive their very own Junior Ranger Certificate to take home! To make a day of it, add on a Monarch Wildlife Cruise. Please note that wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

A very special thank you to The Gold Nugget in Arrowtown đź’›

Allia King’s beautiful hoiho sculpture, which was displayed outside the Lakes District Museum, inspired the team at The Gold Nugget to begin raising awareness among visitors about the plight of our critically endangered hoiho. Through advocating for their protection, the team collected more than $1,400 in donations for OSLT!

They have since shifted to an in-store QR code, allowing customers to donate directly. If your business would like to help support hoiho too, contact us through the OSLT website to learn more.

Some truly wonderful news!

The OPERA - Otago Peninsula Eco Restoration Alliance - has been named one of just three organisations in DOC’s Southern South Island region to receive funding through the Department of Conservations Community Fund 2026

DOC has granted us $543,600 - $181,200 a year for the next three years to support our hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin) rehabilitation work. A huge thank you to DOC for everything they do for conservation across Aotearoa. This support means the world to us and contributes toward our rehab work.

This recognition builds on years of support from the community around us. Every supporter, volunteer and visitor who has backed this kaupapa over the years has helped make this work possible. This grant reflects your support as much as it does our work.

It’s also a reminder of how urgent our work remains. Hoiho are the world’s rarest penguins, and there is a long road ahead if we are going to save this species. This funding gives us three more years to continue providing sick and injured hoiho with the care they need and the best possible chance of survival.

A huge thank you to the UniCrew students who joined us at The OPERA this past Saturday!

Everyone brought so much energy and enthusiasm, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything they achieved together! It was wonderful to have them out at the reserve, getting their hands dirty and giving our native landscape some love. From weeding to installing plant guards, every bit of their mahi helps us create a healthier home for wildlife across the Otago Peninsula.

We can’t wait to welcome even more UniCrew students to the reserve in the future. 🌱🎉

We had a great time at the NZ International Science Fest! 🔬🧬🤍

Thanks to everyone who stopped by for a chat, and a big thank you to the NZ International Science Fest for having us. We loved being part of it!

Education is a big part of what we do at The OPERA. From guessing which species call Aotearoa home to filling our “nature tree” with thoughtful ways to care for nature, it was fantastic to see so many young minds getting curious and involved.
