Look up in the Drawing Room and you will discover an elaborate Elizabethan-style moulded plaster ceiling, created by two Italian craftsmen around 150 years ago.

Rather than being painted afterwards, pigments were added to the wet plaster before it was moulded. This remarkable technique has allowed much of the ceiling’s colour to remain vibrant to this day.

A fitting finishing touch for a room once designed to entertain important guests and showcase the grandeur of the home.

Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful dads and father figures out there.

Today is all about celebrating the people who guide us, support us, make us laugh, and create memories that stay with us for years to come.

During the Victorian era, the libraries of grand homes were scholarly spaces filled with treasured volumes, and the Larnach family’s library was no exception.

By 1882, more than 1,200 books lined the shelves of this room, while William Larnach’s personal collection would grow to nearly 15,000 books by the time of his death in 1898.

The three bookcases you see today are original to the Castle, with several books from William’s own library still on display. Look closely at where the glass-fronted bookcase meets the wall, and you will discover another remarkable detail. Its back was carefully carved to fit perfectly around the profile of the skirting board.

Sometimes, the craftsmanship is hidden in the smallest places.

School Holiday Adventures bring family fun to the Castle, including our special Children’s High Tea experience.

The Spring Collective celebrates local and New Zealand artisans, craftspeople and producers with a vibrant market in a truly unique setting.

Dogs Day Out invites four-legged visitors and their humans to explore the Castle Gardens, with special treats, activities and plenty of fun alongside the SPCA.
