🚒 Thank You, Mosgiel! 🚒

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the Mosgiel Volunteer Fire Brigade Open Day today. We were blown away by the support from our community, with around 500 people coming through the station!

It was fantastic to see so many families getting a behind-the-scenes look at what we do, meeting our firefighters, checking out the trucks and equipment, and learning more about fire safety.

From 2230hrs last night until 0730hrs this morning, our brigade responded to multiple incidents across the Taieri as severe weather brought significant surface flooding across our surrounding areas. Thank you to our brigade families, and the employers who supported our volunteers over this time.

The volume of rain placed significant pressure on the stormwater and watercourses network, resulting in numerous calls for assistance. Our crews worked throughout the night to support the community, alongside other responding agencies, with life and safety risk remaining our priority.

We would like to acknowledge the outstanding collaborative response from Fire and Emergency NZ, New Zealand Police, Hato Hone St John, the Dunedin City Council, the Otago Regional Council, the Mosgiel Taieri Community Response Group, emergency management personnel, utility contractors, the business owners providing refreshments and the many volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.

Events such as these demonstrate the strength of coordinated emergency management and the importance of agencies working together in support of our community.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the flooding. We encourage people to continue offering support to each other, and following the advice of emergency services and local authorities as we move towards the recovery phase.

We are continuing to support civil defence in the areas affected by flooding, and most particularly in Oamaru this morning.

Please stay up to date with MetService New Zealand forecasts and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi - Otago & Southland for your area and anywhere you are travelling. Your local council will have updates on local road closures.
