Winter frost and ice can make roads slippery. Adjust your speed: Slow down and avoid sudden braking or turning.

We're due for very cold overnight temperatures at or below 0ºC this week, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday. These are the perfect conditions for slippery roads in the morning.

Black ice forms when temperatures are at or below freezing (0ºC) and light rain falls on the road, and it can also form when water already on the road freezes when temperatures fall below freezing point.

You can't easily see black ice, but what you can do is travel to the conditions:

• Slow down. Adjust your speed to suit the conditions.
• Increase your following distance to people ahead of you.
• Avoid sudden braking or turning to reduce the risk of sliding.
• Be careful in areas shaded from the sun – they'll stay slippery for longer.

Watch out also when you're travelling over bridges – they get icy before the normal road around them, and they stay icier for longer than the rest of the road.

Turn your headlights on dipped if it's raining. Many of us have silver, grey, or white vehicles which easily blend into the road, grey sky, and the rain. Having your headlights on dipped activates your rear position lights. Together your lights make you much more visible to people behind you and people coming towards you.

State Highway SH87 between Outram and Middlemarch has now RE-OPENED. Take extra care as winter driving conditions remain present.

All other State Highways in the region remain open

🚨 Have you ever stopped to think about what the sound of the fire siren means? 🚨

We often wonder how people feel when they hear our fire siren. We're incredibly lucky to be part of a community that understands its importance and why it's needed.

Our volunteer firefighters give their time freely to protect our community, day and night. The siren remains one of the most reliable ways to notify responders quickly, particularly in areas where mobile coverage, technology, or pagers may not always be enough on their own.

While the sound may be an inconvenience for a few moments, it represents something reassuring: local volunteers responding to help a neighbour in need.

For our firefighters, the siren is much more than a loud alarm—it's a call to action. Whether it's a house fire, motor vehicle crash, medical emergency, or vegetation fire, every minute counts, and a rapid response can make all the difference.
The next time you hear the siren, remember that someone in our community may be experiencing one of the worst days of their life, and our volunteers are answering the call.

And spare a thought for the person who made that 111 call. Hearing the siren can be incredibly reassuring—it lets them know that help is on the way and that their local volunteers are responding. The comfort that brings in such a stressful moment is immeasurable.

Did you feel that? A preliminary 6.3 earthquake, 40kms north of Te Anau at a depth of 53km has been widely felt across the South Island.

We hope everyone is ok, check on friends and neighbours to see how they are and remember Drop, Cover and Hold is the correct action to take in an earthquake.

WEATHER UPDATE #7 – 9.15AM

Heavy rain has continued overnight, and continues to affect the Dunedin region.

We’re encouraging you to stay safe and not travel unless necessary. Fewer cars on the road means less disturbance to the water and helps our crews to work more quickly to clear debris.

Thanks to our hard working crews and contractors who have been working through the night to address impacts on roading and stormwater.

Other key information:
• Our kerbside waste and recycling collection continues today, but there may be delays.
• Te Puna o Whakaehu (Mosgiel Pool) and Mosgiel Library are closed today.
• Sandbags are available at two sandbag stations – Mosgiel Memorial Park gym carpark (entry on Gordon Road) and Dunedin Ice Stadium, Victoria Road, South Dunedin) carpark.
• Flood protection barriers were installed in Surrey St, South Dunedin, and pumps and pipes in South Dunedin have managed the rainfall to date.

There are a number of road closures around the Taieri and roads that are impassible due to flooding.
Do not drive through flooded areas.

Allanton Road is also closed as is SH87.
