03 AUGUST 2026 | In line with its mandate to promote Islamic values and preserve Muslim religious and cultural traditions, the National Commission on Muslim FilipinosβNational Capital Region (NCMFβNCR), under the leadership of Regional Director Dimapuno A. Datu-Ramos, Jr., M.D., CESE, in partnership with the Da'wah Al-Huda Islamic Youth Association (DAIYA), successfully conducted the Janazah Islamic Rites Seminar and Workshop with the theme, "Equipping Muslims with Theoretical Knowledge and Practical Skills," at Pedro Guevara Elementary School, Binondo, Manila on August 2, 2026.
The activity was conducted in collaboration with the Al-Akhawaton Nisah Organization, Students Association for Islamic Affairs (SAIF), and the Ahlul Qur'an and Sunnah Association (AQSA). It aimed to equip Muslim participants with sound theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the proper observance of Islamic funeral rites (Janazah) in accordance with Islamic teachings and relevant Philippine laws while strengthening religious awareness, community participation, and appreciation of Islamic practices.
The program formally commenced with the Welcome Address of Bainoreen Usop, Vice President for External Affairs of the Al-Akhawaton Nisah Organization, who welcomed the participants and acknowledged the support of the partner organizations.
In his Opening Message, Regional Director Dimapuno A. Datu-Ramos, Jr., M.D., CESE emphasized that the proper observance of Janazah is a sacred religious obligation (amanah) entrusted to every Muslim. He underscored the importance of equipping the Muslim community, particularly the youth, with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to preserve this essential aspect of Islamic faith. He likewise reaffirmed the commitment of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos, under the leadership of Secretary Sheikh Sabuddin N. Abdurahim, to continuously support initiatives that promote Islamic values, strengthen Muslim communities, and preserve Islamic traditions.
The activity gathered more than 200 Muslim youth participants from Baseco, Manila, and ParaΓ±aque City, together with representatives from partner organizations and community leaders. Also present was a two-member delegation from the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) composed of CSINSP Saaduddin D. Cauntongan, Deputy Commander for Reformation, and CO1 Marsden C. Paraulla, demonstrating the Bureau's continuing support for programs that promote Islamic education and religious development.
Representing NCMFβNCR were Rohanisa S. Manalusug, Abdul Gani S. Simban, Aminollah D. R. Polog, Jr., and Christian P. Cajuday from the Office of the Regional Director; Al-Jomer P. Ali, Lafayette C. Alonto, and Norhajira S. Barodi from the Cultural Affairs Division; Saladine L. Balt and Nur Rayfa A. Mama from the Muslim Settlement Division; Chief Atty. Jamael U. Batugan, Jr., Atty. Imran A. Pangilinan, Azlenor A. Macapundag, Rohaima M. Ma-amor, and Aleem Mahid B. Mangondaya from the Legal Affairs Division; Chief Ali C. Maruhom, Jr., Jamilon B. Nanak, and Yusoph S. Mangandog from the Peace Building and Conflict Resolution Division; Nazhifah B. Ismael from the Socio-Economic Development Division; and Johayra B. Nanak from the Administrative and Finance Division. Their active participation reflected the Commission's whole-of-office commitment to advancing Islamic education and strengthening partnerships with Muslim communities.
One of the highlights of the seminar was the lecture delivered by Atty. Imran A. Pangilinan of the NCMFβNCR Legal Affairs Division on the Philippine Islamic Burial Act (Republic Act No. 12160). He discussed the salient provisions of the law, emphasizing the legal recognition and protection of Islamic burial practices, the rights of Muslim families, and the responsibilities of government agencies, local government units, healthcare institutions, funeral service providers, and other stakeholders in ensuring its faithful implementation.
Following the lecture, Bae Sharifa Mastura, Co-Chairperson of the Manila Muslim Consultative Council (MMCC), expressed her appreciation to NCMFβNCR, DAIYA, and the partner organizations for organizing a timely and meaningful program that strengthens Islamic knowledge, preserves religious traditions, and promotes unity and community service.
An inspirational message was likewise delivered by Ms. Shalimah "Kaka Sally" Pumbaya, who reminded participants that true preparation for death begins with sincere obedience to Allah (SWT) through faithful observance of Salah, Sawm, repentance, and constant remembrance of Allah. She encouraged everyone to live a life anchored in faith, righteousness, and accountability.
The seminar also featured practical demonstrations on the proper conduct of Islamic funeral rites, enabling participants to apply the knowledge they had gained under the guidance of experienced facilitators and enhancing their competence and confidence in performing Janazah rites in accordance with Islamic teachings.
The program concluded with the Closing Remarks of Fatimah Mamalangkay, President of the Al-Akhawaton Nisah Organization, who expressed her appreciation to NCMFβNCR, DAIYA, partner organizations, resource speakers, volunteers, and the more than 200 participants whose support contributed to the success of the seminar. She encouraged everyone to share the knowledge and skills they had acquired within their families and communities.
The successful conduct of the Janazah Islamic Rites Seminar and Workshop underscored NCMFβNCR's steadfast commitment to promoting Islamic values, preserving Muslim religious and cultural heritage, and empowering Muslim communities through educational and capacity-building initiatives. Through its partnership with DAIYA and other community organizations, NCMFβNCR continues to strengthen collaborative efforts that advance religious literacy, community engagement, and the overall well-being of Muslim Filipinos in the National Capital Region.
