Together with our partners from LGU-Villanueva and VK General Services-MPC, we joined the 6th Silk Summit in Centro de Turismo, Intramuros, Manila, organized recently by DOST-PTRI. We shared updates on our Sericulture Project in Villanueva—an initiative guided and supported by DOST-PTRI-Villanueva.

Ours is a modest start, but one that holds great promise. There is still much to learn and build, yet the strong spirit of collaboration among partners inspires confidence that we can make things happen.

More than just weaving silk, we are weaving opportunities—for livelihood, for innovation, and for local pride. One day, we envision a silk that’s proudly made in Villanueva.

Through this project, we are reminded that great things begin with small, purposeful steps—and with unity, passion, and perseverance, we can turn threads of possibility into a fabric of progress for our community.

This endeavor reflects SPI’s continuing commitment to uplift lives through the Livelihood and Economic Enterprise Development (LEED) Program.

We are happy we have engaged with our barangay partners through two batches of IEC sessions with officials from Barangays Dayawan, Tambobong, and Poblacion 1 in Villanueva, and Mohon and Sta. Cruz in Tagoloan. The sessions allowed us to share updates on our operations, plant performance, and community programs, while also fostering open dialogue with our local partners. As part of our continuing commitment to community development, we turned over health and office equipment to the said barangays to help enhance healthcare delivery and administrative services.

We are grateful for the appreciation expressed by our partners and happy to support their efforts in serving the community.

We were pleased to host the officials of PSALM, led by President Dennis Dela Serna, for a site visit held recently to the DOST–Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) facility in Villanueva. The visit served as an opportunity to share our excitement for the ongoing Silk Weaving Project—a meaningful collaboration among partners - SPI, LGU-Villanueva, and DOST-PTRI aimed at establishing a local silk production industry in Villanueva.

The visit provided valuable insights into silk cocoon production and its transformation into high-quality silk fibers. Our PSALM guests found the experience not only educational but also inspiring, particularly as they toured the Silk Innovation Hub—the first in Mindanao and the largest in the Philippines.

We extend our appreciation to Ms. Jona May Basit and Ms. Pau Castillon of DOST-PTRI for their warm welcome and comprehensive briefing, as well as to our LGU partner, Municipal Tourism Officer Arch. Paul Perocello, for joining and supporting the visit.

The SPI Multipartite Monitoring Team (SPI-MMT), led by Chairman Oliver Ello, recently visited SPI’s Carbon Sink Project — a collaborative initiative with E. Pelaez Ranch Inc. (EPRI) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) — located in Mapawa, Cugman, Cagayan de Oro City.

The team, joined by our SPI colleagues, was warmly welcomed by Mr. Eduardo “Bong” Pelaez, President of EPRI, who provided an insightful briefing on the project’s progress and personally guided the group during the field tour.

Covering a total of 1,200 hectares, the Carbon Sink Project aims to:

- Establish a 500-hectare plantation forest
- Maintain and protect another 500-hectare tree plantation and
- Conduct Timber Stand Improvement (TSI) on an existing 200-hectare natural forest.

Beyond Mapawa, SPI is also implementing an Urban Forestry Project in our host communities of Villanueva and Tagoloan in partnership with the respective local government units. A dedicated plant nursery has been established to supply seedlings needed to reforest targeted areas throughout the 25-year plant operation period.

This long-term initiative is a key component of SPI’s Environmental Conservation (Eco) Program, reflecting the company’s steadfast commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.

SPI employees, together with employees from long-time partners VK General Services-MPC, John Clement’s Consultancy Inc., Davao Cavaliers, and volunteers from Brgy. Balacanas, actively participated in the recent International Coastal Cleanup organized by LGU-Villanueva MENRO.

Along with our partners, we believe that even the simplest actions matter. Every piece of trash collected means a cleaner shore and safer seas for marine life.

Let’s keep working together to protect our coasts, care for our seas, and inspire others to build a cleaner, greener future.
