On August 28, we had 40 women join us at OakStreet on First for a night of Mahjong, connection, and an important conversation about the need for more mentors in our Abilene community.

We’re so grateful to everyone who came out, opened their hearts to the idea of becoming a Big, and helped make the night such a fun one. And a special thank you to OakStreet on First for hosting us and helping bring Mahjong for Mentoring to life!

We’re celebrating two incredible women who were honored at last night’s Abilene Chamber of Commerce Annual Membership Meeting and Awards Celebration!

Stephanie DeLaGarza received the Mark Rogers Young Professional Award, an especially meaningful honor as it carries the name of our late Market President, Mark Rogers. Stephanie exemplifies the kind of servant leadership and commitment to community that makes a lasting difference, and we’re grateful to have her serving on our board.

Helen Usera is a former BBBS board member and continues to make an impact as a Big Sister. Last night, she was honored with the Hispanic Business Council Champion award for her contributions to our community.

Congratulations, Stephanie and Helen! Thank you for the ways you pour into Abilene and make a difference through your work with Big Brothers Big Sisters. We are so proud to celebrate you both!

Today, on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we remember and honor Barbara Keating who holds a special place in BBBS Abilene’s hearts. Barbara’s legacy of serving Big Brothers Big Sisters near Boston is carried on here in Abilene by her grandson, Jared Anderson, our dedicated Program Coordinator. Barbara was a true defender of potential and made an immeasurable impact and it is our honor to remember her today.

Thank you to the Abilene Chamber of Commerce and Abilene Young Professionals for spending your evening with us at last night's AYP After Five.

We loved sharing the impact of mentoring with this incredible group. Here's the thing about being a Big: it only takes 30 minutes, once a week, to change a child's life. But what we hear over and over from our Bigs is that it changes their life right back.

Today, we remember and honor the life of Big Sister Elise Ybarra.

Elise served our community as an Abilene Police Detective and dedicated mentor. Her commitment to serving others left a lasting impact on our organization and the children she supported.

Pictured is her memorial garden at our office, a beautiful reminder of the kindness, compassion, and leadership she shared with so many. We are grateful to remember Elise and the legacy she left behind.

One of the most fun moments of our evening at the Make Your Mark Gala was surprising Little Sister Paizleigh and Big Sister Helen with our 2026 Match of the Year award. These two are a joy to be around AND spread joy wherever they go! Check out their video to see why we think they are such wonderful match that exemplifies the mutual benefit of mentorship.
