September has been a exciting month for ACAP and our partnership with Spectrum!

Spectrum continues to show their commitment to the Albany community and the Power of Change that ACAP offers. On a sunny day in September, with paint rollers and gardening gloves in hand, a team of Spectrum volunteers refreshed our parking lot and added vibrant fall beauty to our neighborhood—showing what community spirit is all about.

We’re also thrilled to share that ACAP has been awarded a $35,000 grant through Spectrum’s Community Center Assist Initiative! This generous support will help us expand workforce development programs, opening doors for even more families in Albany County’s underserved neighborhoods. We are deeply grateful for Spectrum’s ongoing partnership and belief in our mission to empower families and strengthen our community.

For six decades, ACAP has been a place where families grow, dreams take root, and communities are strengthened—one connection at a time. From career training that opens doors, to Head Start programs that spark a lifelong love of learning, our mission is woven into every story of progress and possibility.

Every day, we see grandparents, parents, and caregivers showing up for their children—whether it’s a proud grandparent at drop-off, an auntie joining for Special Person’s Day, or a parent taking steps toward financial empowerment. Their dedication inspires us and reminds us why we do what we do.

Are you passionate about making a change in Albany County?

As the federally designated Community Action Agency serving Albany County, ACAP has provided services to thousands of low-income families and individuals living in Albany County with the intent of breaking barriers keeping them in poverty and creating opportunities for everyone to thrive. Our mission is to partner with families and communities to expand opportunities and build stronger networks to foster upward economic mobility.

ACAP’s 15-member board of directors provides leadership, ambassadorship, and vision benefiting the thousands of individuals served annually by the 130+ staff members ACAP employs. Our customer-focused services are provided through three main departments: Community & Career Services, Early Childhood Education, and Energy Services.

These services are designed to provide support for the whole family, from our Head Start program serving children under 5, to our Career Services program which helps adults thrive in sustainable careers, to the Weather Assistance programs which keeps customer’s homes safer and more comfortable while increasing their energy efficiency.

These programs, plus many more, all contribute to creating The Power of Change in the Albany County Community.

As a board member, your engagement entails:
· Attending meetings every other month;
· Committing to a three-year term;
· Participating in at least one board committee;
· Acting as an ambassador for ACAP and our programs;
· Networking to encourage opportunities supporting ACAP’s growth; and
· Providing leadership and guidance to help ACAP succeed in its goals.

Don’t think you qualify for discounts on your energy bills? Think again.
Half of all New York households are now eligible for relief through New York State’s Energy Affordability Program. The Energy Affordability Program provides eligible customers with utility bill discounts they can count on each month. Millions of New Yorkers are newly eligible this year — don’t leave money on the table.

🎉 ACAP is celebrating 60 years of empowering Albany! 🎉

Did you know? In 1966, as ACAP (then Albany County Opportunity Inc.) began uplifting our community, the TV landscape was changing forever! Both the Batman and Star Trek series premiered this year. Bruce Wayne donned his cape and mask to clean up crime in Gotham and the crew of The Enterprised set off to "boldly go where no man has gone before."

These shows were groundbreaking in casting African American women in major roles. Earth Kitt easily remains the most formidable and memorable Cat Woman, with her distinctive growl. Nichelle Nichols played Lieutenent Uhura and was one of the first black actress playing a main character in a position of power on TV. That role inspired Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space, proving representation matters.

Batman walked so the Marvel universe could run. Star Trek ran so Mae Jemison could fly.
