✨🎉 Celebrating 60 Years of ACAP! 🎉✨

A day in a Head Start classroom may simply look like kids at play, but there are levels of learning happening. Early Childhood Education is more than teaching ABC's and 123's -- it's about nurturing the whole child: intellectually, emotionally, and socially.

When children share costumes or play games together, they’re learning to negotiate, take turns, and compromise. Waiting for a favorite activity teaches patience. And when a block tower tumbles, our caring teachers guide children through big feelings, helping them build resilience and confidence.

Our ECE department deeply believes in the power of education and the boundless potential of every child. That’s why our dedicated teachers design creative lesson plans, foster supportive classrooms, and continually grow their own skills—so every child’s brilliance can shine.

Thank you to every teacher, assistant teacher, family specialist, site supervisor, cook, and coordinator who has been part of our journey. Together, we continue to build strong minds, courageous hearts, and lifelong bonds. 💜

Our Head Start and Early Head Start classrooms are playgrounds of the mind, providing children with a safe and encouraging environment to play in, engage in hands-on learning, and explore their interests. Balancing emotional and social development with academics, our caring and talented teachers design lesson plans that inspire imagination and creativity while preparing them for kindergarten.

✨🎉 Celebrating 60 Years of ACAP! 🎉✨

Six decades ago, the federal government sought to combat poverty in the US with a series of bold initiatives created under Lyndon B. Johnson's Economic Opportunity ACT of 1964. Commonly was referred to as The War of Poverty, President Johnson viewed poverty not as a personal failure, but as a societal failure. He said, "The cause may lie deeper in our failure to give our fellow citizens a fair chance to develop their own capacities, in a lack of education and training, in a lack of medical care and housing, in a lack of decent communities in which to live and bring up their children."

The Act created critical and enduring federal programs like Head Start, Job Corp, Medicare and Medicaid --just to name a few-- designed to address specific challenges and help create a more just nation that cares about all of its citizens.

ACAP (orignally ACOI: Albany County Opportunity Inc.) was born from this Act.
