Today, we joined community members, healthcare advocates, labor leaders, faith organizations, and elected officials in communities across the state for a coordinated day of action to celebrate the 61st anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, while condemning recent federal attacks on affordable healthcare.

“For over 60 years these programs have proven that public healthcare works,” said Ursula Rozum, Co-Director of Campaign Organizing at Citizen Action of New York. “Medicaid and Medicare save lives, strengthen our communities, and make care affordable for millions of people. Instead of dismantling them to fund tax breaks for billionaires and corporations, our leaders should be expanding what works and making quality, affordable healthcare a reality for everyone.”

We know that programs like rent stabilization and housing assistance have kept hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers in their homes downstate. What works in New York City should be available to families in Rochester too.

The Monroe County Legislature has the authority to act. We need them to vote yes.

The Trump administration and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin are pushing hard to revive the Constitution Pipeline—a 125-mile fracked gas project that New York already rejected. It’s the latest move in their broader assault on climate progress: gutting environmental protections, rolling back clean energy investments, and handing wins to fossil fuel corporations at every turn.

But we refuse to let closed-door deals, special corporate interests, and federal pressure undo the progress we have already made.

Tonight’s wins belong to the organizers, volunteers, members, and neighbors who knocked on doors, made calls, and refused to accept that our politics must be dominated by wealthy donors and special interests. These victories show that the progressive movement isn’t waiting for change — we’re building it block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood, and election by election.
