🏘️ New CDRPC Report: Multifamily Housing on the Rise in the Capital Region

The Capital District Regional Planning Commission has released On the Rise: Multifamily Housing in the Capital Region 2026, examining more than a century of multifamily housing development across Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady counties.

📈 11,280+ multifamily units are currently proposed, under construction, or in planning for 2025–2029.

💡Key findings:
• 76,322 multifamily units were constructed between 1900 and 2024.
• Recent projects are getting larger, with developments of 50+ units accounting for 85% of units built from 2020–2024.
• Multifamily development has increasingly shifted beyond the region’s traditional urban centers.
• Today’s development pipeline is spread across a broad network of suburban municipalities.

The report provides historical context for current housing trends and highlights the importance of coordinating housing, transportation, infrastructure, and land-use planning as the region grows.

🚨 New data drop
A new report from the Capital District Regional Planning Commission shows that while the region saw a modest net loss of 556 residents to domestic migration in 2022–2023, it remains one of New York State’s top-performing regions for attracting and retaining residents.

Key takeaways:

➡️ Ranked 3rd among New York regions for migration performance
➡️ Strong inflows from New York City and the Mid-Hudson Valley helped offset out-of-state departures
➡️ Saratoga County led regional growth
➡️ Schenectady County saw the strongest gains from NYC movers
➡️ Migration is becoming increasingly important as births decline and the population ages

While challenges remain, the Capital Region continues to stand out as a place where people choose to live, work, and build their futures.
As our communities grow and evolve, understanding these migration trends will help shape housing, workforce development, and economic opportunities for years to come.

Very sad news. Carm was a champion of the Capital Region and, as any good regionalist, he was relentlessly optimistic. An exemplar of public service, he inspired, by example, so many in government service to follow his lead. To work together, not in self interest, but in service of the interests of the region and its people. His legacy is rooted in those he inspired, and in the impact they continue to make.
