The Anaheim Police Department will be conducting a DUI Checkpoint in East Anaheim beginning at 6:00 p.m. tonight.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs puts everyone on the road at risk. If you’re planning to drink or use ma*****na, make a plan for a safe ride home before you head out.

Remember:
• A DUI doesn’t only apply to alcohol. You can also be arrested for driving while impaired by ma*****na or other drugs.
• A first-time DUI conviction can cost more than $13,500 in fines, fees, insurance increases and other expenses.
• The consequences can include license suspension, court costs, DUI education programs and even jail time.

Don’t risk your life or someone else’s. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare or taxi, or stay where you are until you’re sober.

Drive sober. Arrive safely.

Today, the Anaheim Police Department welcomed Deputy Chief Luis Martinez, who was officially sworn in as a member of APD!

Deputy Chief Martinez will lead the Department’s Operations Bureau and oversee the Professional Standards Section. His appointment comes as part of APD’s new two-bureau command structure, with each bureau overseen by a Deputy Chief. The updated structure will help strengthen oversight across the Department while preparing for future growth and major events in Anaheim, including the LA28 Olympic Games.

Deputy Chief Martinez brings more than 20 years of law enforcement experience to Anaheim. He began his career with the Culver City Police Department in 2003, serving in numerous assignments including patrol, investigations, narcotics, training, special enforcement, professional standards and special operations. He rose through the ranks to Captain before joining the Torrance Police Department in 2025, where he oversaw the Patrol Bureau.

Born in El Salvador and raised in Los Angeles, Deputy Chief Martinez holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a Master of Public Administration from National University, along with a master’s degree in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership from the University of San Diego.

He has also completed several leadership programs, including the LAPD West Point Leadership Program, California Police Chiefs’ Executive Leadership Institute and POST California Command College. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and has received several honors throughout his career, including the Medal of Valor, Supervisor of the Year Award and Career Achievement Award.

Outside of his professional assignments, Deputy Chief Martinez was a longtime member of the Culver City Police Department’s Baker to Vegas Team, serving as Team Captain for more than a decade. He enjoys staying active, spending time with his family, and cheering on his favorite sports teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, USC Trojans, San Francisco 49ers and Villa Park Rangers FC.

Please join us in welcoming Deputy Chief Luis Martinez to Anaheim! 👏

That’s a wrap on D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event! ✨

This year’s event featured the largest Disney D23 show floor ever, more than 50 panels, and major presentations at the Honda Center as D23 expanded beyond the Anaheim Convention Center into a celebration spanning venues across the city. Altogether, Anaheim welcomed around 100,000 D23 attendees!

In addition to maintaining day-to-day police operations citywide, Anaheim PD personnel supported public safety and traffic operations for D23 events at the Convention Center, Honda Center, and throughout the busy Resort District.

An event of this scale takes a tremendous coordinated effort, and we’re proud to do our part to help keep Anaheim safe for our residents and the thousands of visitors who come to experience everything our city has to offer.

On August 15, 1975, Anaheim Police Narcotics Investigators were involved in a surveillance mission of drug suspects. The suspects were being followed towards the Palm Springs area.

Narcotics Investigators involved in this surveillance asked for the assistance of our helicopter. Unfortunately, a pilot was not available. Vice Narcotics and Organized Crime Investigator Gary A. Nelson, one of the first helicopter pilots, volunteered as pilot for this case. Officer Robert DePartee assisted in the helicopter.

While monitoring the route of the drug suspects, Anaheim Police helicopter “Angel” collided into a high mountain of Idyllwild, instantly killing Officer Nelson. Co-pilot DePartee was seriously injured. Officer Nelson was Anaheim’s second law enforcement officer to be killed in the line of duty. He was 35 years old.

Nelson was a United States Navy veteran and served with the Anaheim Police Department for eleven years. In 1986, the Anaheim Police Department Heliport was dedicated to the memory of Officer Gary A. Nelson.

Rest in peace to our brother Gary A. Nelson, Badge #131, you are never forgotten.

Thank you to the Los Angeles Angels for recognizing the law enforcement community and hosting a great night at the Big A. Anaheim PD’s presence was felt through Angel Stadium for Law Enforcement Appreciation Night!

Chief Manny Cid brought the heat with the ceremonial first pitch! Records Supervisor D. Hobday-Smith performed the National Anthem while our Honor Guard presented the colors and Air Support took to the skies.

APD’s Employees of the Year received special recognition on the field!

Throughout the evening, our Community Policing Team connected with fans and guests got an up-close look at an APD SWAT vehicle display.

Part of the proceeds from the Angels Law Enforcement Appreciation Night benefit the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. 💙

Last night, Police and Fire Chiefs from across Orange County came together for Motorhome Madness to raise awareness and funds for Rady Children's Health - Orange County, formerly CHOC.

Anaheim Police Chief Manny Cid made his Motorhome Madness debut, while Sgt. Fay also represented APD in the Figure 8 Demolition Derby.

Thanks to the incredible support of our communities, $53,124 was raised for Rady Children’s Health!

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared the fundraising link, came out to cheer on the competitors, or helped spread the word. Every bit of support helped bring attention to the important work Rady Children’s Health does for children and families across Orange County.
