✨ Voices of the Journey: Families 💛

Sometimes the right child care provider just clicks.

In 2003, one family shared this after reaching out to thread for help finding care:

“We chose Irma as Shasa’s daycare provider - we didn’t even interview anyone else! My husband and I knew she was the right one, and Shasa loved her. Thanks again for the referral. You made our lives so much easier and stress free.”
— Melia & Jeremy

That’s the goal: helping families find care where their children feel safe, happy, and right at home. 🧸✨

✨ Did you know?

A lot was shifting at the turn of the millennium - and we mean that literally! 🚚

1999–2000 brought some important transitions for child care in Alaska:

🏛️ The Child Care Program Office moved from the Department of Education & Early Development to the Department of Health & Social Services - strengthening connections to family and health supports.

🏢 Child Care Connection (thread) in Anchorage also packed up and moved to the Success by 6 Building in Mountain View, opening the door to new opportunities.

The new space meant:

✨ Better accessibility for family child care providers
✨ Stronger partnerships with neighboring organizations
✨ A larger training room for educators
✨ Expanded lending library resources
✨ Plenty of parking for families and providers

Sometimes progress means packing a few boxes and heading somewhere new. 💛

At thread, everything we do begins with connection. 🫂

For 40 years, thread has helped bring together families, early educators, and communities across Alaska to create safe, nurturing, and affordable learning environments for our youngest children. ❣️ These connections help build strong foundations not only for children, but for the future of our communities.

None of this would be possible without the generosity of supporters like you. 🤗

As we celebrate this milestone year, we invite you to support our $40 for 40 Years Campaign and help thread continue connecting families and educators with the resources they need to help Alaska’s littlest learners thrive. ✨

Together, we can ensure every child has the opportunity for a strong and healthy start in life.

✨ Voices of the Journey: Families 💛

Sometimes finding the right child care just takes a little help - and that’s where thread comes in.

In 2003, one parent shared this note after reaching out for support:

“Thank you, I have put my children on the wait list at Joy Lutheran and for the interim have enrolled them at Little Red School House. Thank you for your assistance in helping me find daycare.” – Cindy

Behind every referral is a family working to find the right fit for their children. We’re proud to help make those connections every day. 🌟

✨ Did You Know?

Some years bring a lot of momentum - and for thread, 1997 was one of them. 🚀

That year, thread saw a leadership transition when Beth Edmunds stepped down as Executive Director and Sharron Lattery stepped in to lead the next chapter.

At the same time, progress was happening across Alaska’s early childhood network. SEA-AEYC (now the Southeast Childhood Collective) received Child Care Resource & Referral funding from the State of Alaska, expanding support for families and child care providers in Southeast Alaska. 💛

New leadership. Expanded resources. Growing impact across the state.

1997 was proof that when change happens, opportunity grows too.
