🚁 Landing Zone Training with Delta Township Fire! 🚒

We had a great time working with Delta Township Fire for a landing zone (LZ) class, reviewing the coordination and safety that go into setting up a safe landing zone for our aircraft.

And they even gave our crew a ride up in the bucket… 100 feet in the air! 😳🔥 Definitely a different view from what we’re used to!

Huge thank you to Delta Township Fire Department for hosting us, taking the time to train with our crew, and giving us the opportunity to learn and work together. Training alongside our fire service partners helps keep everyone prepared when it matters most.

We’re proud to see one of our own representing University of Michigan Survival Flight on the national stage at AMTC in Fort Worth.

Jeff Thomas, will be presenting “Impacting Clinical Trajectory with Point-of-Care Ultrasound in Critical Care Transport.”

He truly is the driving force behind Survival Flight’s ultrasound training program and its continued development and updates. His dedication to education and clinical innovation continues to elevate the practice of our entire team.

If you know Jeff you know he truly cares about his patients and it shows daily through his work.

His presentation will highlight how POCUS can help critical care transport clinicians make real-time decisions in some of the most challenging environments — from differentiating shock and identifying obstructive physiology to guiding resuscitation and reducing diagnostic uncertainty.

But what makes Jeffrey stand out goes beyond his expertise. He is an outstanding colleague who consistently goes above and beyond for his patients and the team around him.

We’re excited to see him share his knowledge and experience with the transport medicine community at AMTC. Congratulations, Jeff! 💙💛

Ever wonder what happens when a call comes in for Survival Flight? 🚁📞

It starts with our Communications Specialists.

They’re responsible for taking in the information for flight requests, coordinating and dispatching the appropriate resources, flight following, and communicating with outside hospitals, dispatch centers, and ambulance services.

But their role goes far beyond flight requests.

Our Communications Specialists also answer the EMS radio for University of Michigan Hospital’s ER and page specialty teams including:

🚨 Trauma Team
🧠 Stroke Team
⚠️ Disaster Team
💙 Code Blue Team

And there’s a reason our dispatchers have such a strong EMS background.

To become a Survival Flight Communications Specialist, you must be:

• A licensed Emergency Medical Technician
• Have at least 1 year of EMS road experience
• Have 3 years of dispatch experience

So when that call comes in, there’s an experienced EMS professional on the other end gathering information, coordinating resources, and helping keep communication moving from the first call to the patient’s destination. We’ve got a an open position so shoot us a message if you’d be interested!

Survival Flight’s Katelyn Dykas, Recognized as “Hometown Hero”

Those who know Katelyn know that who she is as a flight nurse is simply an extension of who she is outside of Survival Flight. She is generous with her time, quick to support others, always willing to teach, and genuinely invested in helping the people around her succeed.

As a flight nurse, she has dedicated herself to caring for critically ill and injured patients, but her impact reaches far beyond the aircraft. Through education, community outreach, and social media, Katelyn has helped bring nursing, emergency care, and the air medical profession to audiences at the local, state, and national level. She has a gift for making education approachable, relatable, and fun while connecting with people wherever they are.

Whether she is caring for a patient, teaching a colleague, connecting with the community, or simply making the people around her laugh, she brings the same energy, authenticity, and heart.

We are fortunate at Survival Flight to work alongside so many people committed to education, service, and their communities, and we love seeing one of our own recognized for the unique way she carries that mission beyond our walls.

Congratulations, Katelyn Dykas on being named a Hometown Hero. Those of us lucky enough to know and work alongside you already knew you were one. 💙💛🚁

We’re excited to be part of the celebration as Michigan Medicine Emergency Medicine is recognized for 25 years of serving our community.

Weather permitting, you may see our Survival Flight aircraft making a flyover as we honor the incredible staff who show up every day to care for our patients.

And this one is extra special for us…

One of our own flight nurses, Katelyn, is being honored as the Hometown Hero of the Game! 🚁💙💛

Today, we remember.

On September 11, 2001, 2,977 lives were lost in a tragedy that forever changed our nation. Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor those who never made it home, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the families whose lives were forever changed.

We remember their names. We remember their sacrifice. We remember the courage, selflessness, and unity shown in the days that followed.

From all of us at Survival Flight, we pause today to honor the lives lost and all those impacted by September 11, 2001.
