HVA's Special Pathogens Response Team took part in a training exercise with Henry Ford Health Detroit, University of Michigan Health-Sparrow, Corewell Health Grand Rapids Hospitals, Life EMS Ambulance, and Mobile Medical Response. The purpose of the exercise was to run through the long-distance transport of a highly-infectious patient from one healthcare facility to another, giving all healthcare providers involved a chance to collaborate, develop communications plans, and practice infectious control procedures.
While viruses that require this level of patient isolation rarely enter the US, having a strong plan of action in place is vital for proper virus containment and the safety of the patient and healthcare providers should the need ever arise.
The emergency crews started in Detroit, transferred the mock patient in Lansing, and ended in Grand Rapids at Corewell Health, one of just 13 facilities in the country equipped to treat patients with special pathogens.
