The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) creates research partnerships between undergraduate students and University of Michigan researchers. All schools and colleges are active participants in UROP, which provides a wealth of interesting research topics for program participants. UROP started with 14 student/faculty partnerships in 1988, and has expanded to include more than 1300 students and 800 faculty researchers. Today’s UROP Spotlight: Katelyn Warkentien! 🌟

We’re excited to celebrate Katelyn Warkentien, who served as a UROP Peer Facilitator in 2025!

Katelyn recently presented her research findings, “Temporal and Biomechanical Characteristics of Timed Up and Go Performance in Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities,” at the 2026 Gatlinburg Conference.

In addition to this accomplishment, Katelyn was the recipient of the Laraine Masters Glidden Undergraduate Student Award! 🏆

Happy National Transfer Student Week. UROP wants to give a special shoutout to our Changing Gears students.

Changing Gears (CG) is a UROP program designed primarily for community college transfer students who will be attending the University of Michigan, but also serves students transferring from 4-year institutions. Students in the CG Program become a part of an ongoing faculty-driven research, scholarly, or creative project in their field of interest. Students learn valuable academic skills, applying these skills to their research project, academics, and future career opportunities, while receiving academic credit or compensation for their efforts in research work.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program (DCERP) Showcase!

A huge congratulations to all of our student presenters, who dedicated their summer to partnering with Detroit nonprofit organizations on community-driven research projects led by the organizations themselves. Your hard work, curiosity, and commitment to making a meaningful impact were truly inspiring.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to our mentors for their support and guidance throughout the summer. Thank you for helping our students deepen their understanding of Detroit’s rich history, culture, and communities while fostering meaningful research experiences.
