Our team is in Saginaw today for some peer learning on housing. 🏘️💡

Our member communities in the region are sharing the work they've done to support housing through a combination of zoning updates, vacant land inventory, pre-reviewed plan programs, and financial incentives. Plus, several local developers are talking about their work underway and sharing insights on what makes or breaks housing development projects.

Let’s set the record straight. Elected officials and subject matter experts in Clinton Township and beyond recognize the need for more housing. Being at the core of the issue, they also know that overriding local voices with state-led mandates is a dangerous game to play. ⚠️

It’s critical to ensure residents and local leaders maintain agency over the housing decisions that will impact them most. 🏘️ Stand up for local democracy by opposing the Housing Readiness Package. Sign on in opposition at the link below. ⬇️

Local leaders across the state are calling on the legislature to recognize that when it comes to housing, one size does NOT fit all. 🚫 At our recent press conference, Brenda F. Moore, Mayor of the City of Saginaw and President of the Michigan Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (MBC-LEO), weighed in on how preemption will impact her community.

This isn’t the first time that Mayor Moore and her colleagues have expressed concerns towards the Housing Readiness Package. In March, MBC-LEO released a statement condemning preemption and urging legislators to instead support housing programs that prioritize partnership. 🏘️🤝

“Given the long history of top-down decisions that have harmed many communities—particularly communities of color—we should be cautious about asking local residents to surrender their voice and authority over neighborhood development to distant decision-makers in state government,” the statement reads.

If the language used in the House GovOps committee hearing last week isn't accurate to the actual laws proposed in the Housing Readiness Package, what is? Here are the facts. If passed, these bills would:

🏠 Override local zoning laws related to minimum lot size, ADUs, and more
🏠 Provide no guarantee of affordability
🏠 Create "by right" laws, requiring municipalities to automatically approve projects, not just “consider” them
🏠 Preempt community-led decision-making for local leaders and residents alike

For many years, the League has been advocating for positive housing change, including zoning reform, adopting preapproved plans, and increasing multi-family home construction, like duplexes and triplexes, not through preemption, but through partnership. The fact of the matter is that the Housing Readiness Package does not address the root of our current housing crisis. Don't be fooled by the flowery language.

We weren't allowed the opportunity to give testimony during the House GovOps Committee hearing on Thursday... but that didn't stop us from making sure our voices were heard. 📣

Yesterday, the League hosted a press conference, in partnership with the Michigan Townships Association and the SEMCOG, Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, to tell the state legislature that one-size-fits-all housing policy does NOT fit the diverse needs of our great state's communities.

See that stack of papers? Each page contains a signature from a concerned local resident and/or official, urging legislators to see that blanket mandates are not a viable solution to the housing shortage. Over 2,200 local officials and four hundred Michigan residents have signed a letter opposing this zoning preemption package.

Want to take action? Join these municipal leaders voicing their opposition to House Bills 5529–5532 and 5581–5585 by signing our letter here:
