Creating a Safe Space to Talk About Online Encounters

Online grooming can happen quickly or over time. This process exploits a child's trust and shifts expectations of what safe behavior is, while leveraging fear or shame to keep a child silent.

According to experts, approximately 1 in 5 kids aged 9-12 reported having a sexual interaction with someone they believed to be an adult. Often kids will try to handle this alone, leading to feelings of isolation and shame and more harmful situations. An open dialogue can help your child know you are there for them.

Kids often don't come to parents about awkward or uncomfortable online interactions because they are embarrassed or scared they will lose privileges. Talking about this openly and directly builds trust and shows your child no topic is off limits with you, and they won't get in trouble.

Thorn for Parents has created an excellent online guide about how parents can help their kids navigate risky online encounters for kids. Using this guide, parents will:

Proactively teach your child how to get out of risky interactions online
Make sure your child knows how to recognize red flags and make an exit plan
Continue an open dialogue and create a safe space to come to you or a trusted adult. You can access this online guide at https://parents.thorn.org/guides/risky-online-encounters/.

The Children's Center counselors specialize in trauma counseling. Many of our clients need to journal as part of their healing process, but can not afford to purchase journals or pens, or even extra notebook paper. If anyone is interested in making donations, these are great items and the kids are so very appreciative! Thank you in advance!
