***URGENT*** Beginning tomorrow, September 16, 2026, and lasting for 3-5 months, sections of Puryear Road and Old San Antonio Rd will be closed.

A road closure was approved by Travis County Court on 9/9/26 for the intersection of Puryear Rd. and Old San Antonio Rd starting 9/16/26 for 180 days or until the work is completed. The developer will install portable message signs this week at various locations near this intersection to inform traveling motorists.

The photos in this post show the affected areas, detour, and closure signage. Please avoid the area if possible.

SEPTEMBER IS PREPAREDNESS MONTH! If an area emergency requires a mandatory evacuation, do you know where to go? We have two pre-designated Temporary Assembly Points (TAPs) in our area: The Pavilion at Manchaca United Methodist Church at 1011 W FM 1626 (accessible off the private drive on Lowden Ln) and the west parking lot of Hays Hills Baptist Church at 1401 N FM 1626, just west of the Hays/Travis County line.

If local authorities declare a mandatory evacuation, one or both of the Temporary Assembly Points will open. Resources will be deployed to the TAPs to handle medical emergencies, track evacuees for accountability purposes, and provide needed assistance. QR code check-in links will activate when the TAP opens.

Recently, our first responders completed a multi-agency swift water rescue certification course at a state-of-the-art swift water training facility in Tarrant County. This training provides the knowledge and skills needed to save lives during a water rescue incident while keeping our first responders as safe as possible.

TCESD5 crew/apparatus are still out on a TIFMAS deployment assisting with the Ross Fire outside of Jacksboro Texas. The fire is at 90,400 acres and only 57% contained. Our tender has provided countless water fill ups and water supply for the fire trucks there. Our crew even had a moment to stop by one of the most famous haunted houses in Mineral Wells. Check out the number on the house! 501! Our crew is expected to be released tomorrow due to the 14day deployment time period.

Travis County Emergency Services District 5 received a call at approximately 4:20p.m. yesterday for two individuals trapped underneath a house that was under construction. We had experienced what the national weather service was calling 50 to 70 miles an hour straight line winds from a storm. Four workers were working on the house at the time and it started to collapse on them. Two of the workers got out safely but the other two did not. The entire house collapsed, including the second floor, trapping the workers. One of the workers was conscious and breathing and pinned underneath the framework of the house and unfortunately the other worker sustained injuries incompatible with life. A rescue operation which involved the Austin Fire Special Operations team was initiated to stabilize and lift the house off of the individual who was pinned underneath it.

The neighbor next to the house reported that the winds were so intense the trees were blowing sideways and then she heard a loud boom, which was the house collapsing.

Many thanks go to all the rescuers and responders of Travis County Emergency Services District No. 5, the Austin Fire Department, Austin Fire Spec Ops, Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services, and Travis County STAR Flight. Also, special thanks to Travis County Emergency Services and Austin Emergency Management and Travis County Sheriff's Office Office who assisted with this event. Our condolences go out to the family of those involved in this tragic incident.

The Travis County Commissioners Court will hold a public hearing on September 1, 2026 at 9a regarding the proposed construction, road closure, and detour of Old San Antonio Rd. and Puryear Rd.

The proposed construction and detour would be from September 16 - February 21, 2027 (approximately 5 months).

TCESD5 sent Tender 501 out yesterday evening to help with fire fighting efforts on the Ross fire in Jacksboro TX. The 50,000 acre fire continues to grow and is only 8% contained. They rolled in about midnight.
