The Texas State Guard is now recruiting for the next Officer Candidate School (OCS) class.

OCS is the premier leadership development program for Service Members seeking a commission as an officer in the Texas State Guard. Through challenging academic instruction, field training, and practical leadership experiences, candidates develop the skills and confidence required to lead Soldiers in support of the Texas State Guard's state mission.

Whether leading a team through complex scenarios, making decisions under pressure, or strengthening your military knowledge and professional presence, OCS prepares future officers to serve with competence, character, and commitment.

Basic Eligibility
✔ Four-year college degree (waivers may be considered)
✔ Under 50 years of age (waivers considered to age 54)
✔ In good standing with your unit
✔ Demonstrated leadership potential and a desire to serve

If you are ready to take the next step in your military career and answer the call to lead, now is the time to begin the process.

AUSTIN, Texas - Command Sgt. Maj. James Williams assumed responsibility as the command sergeant major of 3rd Battalion, 6th Brigade, Texas State Guard, during a change of responsibility ceremony Aug. 29, 2026, at Camp Mabry.

The ceremony marked the transition of senior enlisted leadership from outgoing Command Sgt. Maj. Surdam to Williams, who will serve as the senior enlisted advisor for 3rd Battalion.

Maj. Gonzales, 3rd Battalion commander, presided over the change of responsibility. Sgt. Maj. Wells served as master of ceremonies, Chaplain (Capt.) Oberhelman participated in the ceremony, and Master Sgt. Cervantes, 3rd Battalion first sergeant, also took part.

Following the change of responsibility, Williams was promoted to command sergeant major. His family joined him for the promotion, with his spouse, Heather Scobie, assisting with the changing of rank.

Texas civilian medical professionals proudly serving Texans!

Operation Border Health (OBH) brought Texas State Guard service members together with incredible partners—The Texas Department of State Health Services, Remote Area Medical (RAM), UTRGV, Laredo College Nursing schools, and other local agencies—to deliver critical health services to underserved communities.
This preparedness exercise strengthens our ability to respond when disaster strikes.

190 Years of Service to Texas

Today, the Texas Military Department commemorates 190 years of service to the State of Texas.

On August 5, 1836, the Congress of the Republic of Texas established the War Department, laying the foundation for what is now the Texas Military Department. For nearly two centuries, generations of service members have answered the call to protect and serve Texans during emergencies, disasters, and times of need.

Today, that proud legacy continues through the dedicated members of the Texas Army National Guard, Texas Air National Guard, and Texas State Guard. Their commitment to readiness, service, and support for the people of Texas reflects the enduring values established 190 years ago.

The 6th Brigade, Texas State Guard, proudly joins in recognizing this historic milestone and honors the generations of service members, past and present, whose dedication has strengthened our state.

Happy 190th Anniversary, Texas Military Department!
