One of the specialties officers can focus in at the Bangor Police Department is becoming a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). This involves advanced training above and beyond the Standard Field Sobriety tests that officers receive as part of the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program (BLETP) at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy (MCJA). Officers interested in becoming DREs need to attend the Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) also at the Academy in Vassalboro. In order to become certified, officers have to be selected by the MCJA, pass written and field examinations, and maintain a certification annually with continuing education and an 80-percent accuracy rating on all DRE testing.

Officers who maintain this certification are often called in when the intoxilyzer test doesn't match the level of intoxication being exhibited by the subject (i.e. they blow .00 on an intox, but cannot stay awake or maintain balance). Officers can be called in while off duty to evaluate someone who appears to be under the influence of drugs and can also be called upon to assist other agencies who may not have a DRE available. DREs determine if the person is impaired, not impaired or needs medical services (i.e. is having a medical event).

Bangor PD currently has three certified DREs on rotation. Are you interested in being part of an agency that offers a wide range of specialties and high levels of training? We can see you here. Apply today: https://www.bangormaine.gov/jobs.aspx?CommunityJobs=False&CatID=Police-Department-102

We are not sure exactly what happened to summer, but we have just a few short days before school will be starting again.

🚌Bangor Schools will be having their first day on Sept 1. This means there will be more students out and about, buses will be picking up and dropping off, and school zone speeds will be enforced. Make sure you plan your commutes accordingly. Give yourself some extra time and keep your eyes out for our kids so everyone can make it to school safe.

UPDATE: Mr. Wruck has been located safely. We appreciate your assistance.

Sometimes it's the little things that make a big impact on people. On Aug. 11, Officer Chasse was on patrol when she was flagged down by a woman and her friend who needed to get to the airport a little before 5 a.m. that morning. They had tried unsuccessfully to get an Uber or another ride. Officer Chasse obliged.

The lift to the airport made an impression on both women. They sent boxes of goodies from from Frank's Bakery along with a thank-you note for Chasse who "saved the day," remarking on her good spirit and the care she gave them.

City of Bangor, Maine - City Hall wants everyone to know that there will be more overnight work that will close Broadway this evening from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday and Friday. Detours are available. Check out their post for more details.

Please be aware that another nighttime closure of Broadway at the intersection with Interstate 95 will occur this week to facilitate the ongoing work to replace the I-95 bridge over Broadway.

That portion of Broadway will be closed from 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, to 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14. The closure is necessary to allow equipment on the road that will be used to remove the existing concrete barrier and steel sheets below the bridge.

Vehicles heading northbound on Broadway, away from Downtown, will be redirected onto Stillwater Avenue. They can then get onto I-95 south near the Bangor Mall, and exit onto Broadway just north of the construction zone.

Vehicles traveling south on Broadway will be redirected onto I-95 south. They can exit onto Union Street and travel south toward Downtown, eventually reaching Hammond and then State streets which will take them back to Broadway.

The bridge project is being conducted by the Maine Department of Transportation and the City of Bangor appreciates the patience of motorists, residents and businesses as this important infrastructure project continues.
