Stop scrolling and take a few minutes to read this article about the Hancock County Fire Academy, featuring cadets from several MDI-area fire departments.
Hosted by the Hancock County Firefighters Association and affiliated with the Maine Fire Service Institute since 2010, this program has provided outstanding training opportunities for more than 300 students from area fire departments. Current and former lead instructors, along with a dedicated support staff, continue to do an impeccable job preparing the next generation of firefighters.
TFD firefighter Corey Walker is among this year’s cadets and shares details about his experiences over the past six months in this featured write-up.
With only a few weeks remaining for FF Walker and the HCCFA Class of 2026, we hope they enjoy every remaining minute of this incredible commitment and experience.

Interested in becoming a member of one of the MDI or Hancock County area fire departments? Don’t wait — training opportunities like this are available each year from January through June.

Eight TFD members spent Monday morning extinguishing a fire of the contents inside a 20-yard roll-off container.
Family members of the resident had spent much of the weekend filling the container with the typical contents of a garage and basement clean-out. Among the discarded items pulled form the debris were several obsolete battery-operated power tools which, combined with moisture from the saturating rain, likely caused a source of ignition for the fire.

Engine 5 arrived first on scene and due to the container’s close proximity to a two-bay garage, the driver utilized the remotely operated bumper-mounted turret from the driver’s seat to quickly knock down the heavy flames. Additional members deployed hand lines and established a water supply from Engine 4.
Fortunately, the garage structure was not damaged.

Members worked through less than ideal conditions as the heavy rainfall enjoyable smoke conditions to overhaul the scene and removed most of the container’s contents to prevent any rekindling.
Please use extra caution when disposing of items such as lithium batteries and marine flares.

Do you live or work in Tremont? TFD is currently accepting applications for new volunteer members. No experience is required. Training and PPE will be provided. Application information can be found at TremontFire.org.

Memorial Day isn’t just about cookouts, parades and kicking off the start of summer for our small coastal community.
It’s a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice.
Today, we remember those who didn't make it home from the battlefield, and we honor our fallen brothers and sisters in the fire service who gave their lives protecting their communities. WE HONOR. WE REMEMBER. WE WILL NEVER FORGET.
