Welcome to Sassafras Valley Ranch, a TRULY low input cattle operation! Nestled in the Ozark Hills, just outside of Belle, Missouri, we specialize in South Poll Cattle. Our mission is simple: raise gentle, easy-fleshing, moderate-sized cattle that are selected on fescue for fertility, hardiness, and longevity. Here at SVR “Mother Nature” is our best genetic selection tool, and we stay faithful to o

ur slogan of being a TRULY low input operation. We don’t supplement or develop bulls and heifers with cubes, tubs, soy pellets, or the like; we don’t use upscale minerals; we don’t plant fancy forages; we don’t feed expensive silage or alfalfa hay; we manage without wormers and other chemical crutches; and lastly, we avoid the increasing plethora of additives and gimmicks surrounding the forage-fed cattle industry that raid profit! We invite you to follow along our journey as we continue producing low input South Poll cattle and Katahdin sheep!

Finally got some much needed rain this week. Nice to see the creek rolling! Bred heifers are developing nicely on strip-grazed, stockpiled grass. Calving will start at the end of the month!

I evaluated ribeyes from 23-25 mo old grass fed South Poll steers for Warner-Bratzler shear force today for a semen customer. Lots of hay feeding at Sassafras Valley Ranch today in preparation for the artic freeze! We unrolled hay, bale grazed, fed hay with the truck, fed in rings, and unrolled preset bales down a hill. Twenty-six bales to 300 plus cows, 16 herd bulls, 75 yearlings, 175 sheep, and 1 donkey on eight different places…whew!
