After a record number of signatures gathered during the first week, the initiative to repeal the state income tax (IP26-645) is off to a booming start. So it's No surprise that Governor Bob Ferguson is panicking," says Washington State Republican Party Chairman Rep. Jim Walsh.

"The people of Washington state understand what's going on. They see it," adds Chairman Walsh.

He is referring, specifically, to one small paragraph in the 109-page bill that pertains to the household income exclusion. "Remove that one paragraph and the 9.9% state income tax will apply to every working family in Washington state," he says.

Ferguson’s panic is reflected in a weird public statement on social media saying: “So long as I am Governor, I will veto Any attempt to lower the threshold or raise the rate of this tax…”

But Washingtonians know better than to trust anything Ferguson says. Skepticism for the governor is so widespread that a community note (see below) aims to correct the record: "The tax is not constitutionally locked to incomes over $1M; Democrats rejected Amendment 696 requiring voter-approved limits on the threshold and rate. The bill's necessity clause prevents referendum, so voters can only challenge it via initiative."
