🔥🧪 From MREs to DIY Flameless Heaters! 🧪🔥

Our 7th-grade scientists are diving into OpenSciEd Unit 7.2: Chemical Reactions – Energy, and things are heating up in the science lab! 🌡️

We kicked off our investigation by opening an MRE (Meal, Ready-to-Eat) and observing how a flameless heater produces heat to warm a pouch of food. Now, our scientists are experimenting with everyday materials to discover which combinations produce the best heating source.

Through hands-on investigations, students discovered that not all chemical reactions release heat! Some reactions absorb heat from their surroundings (endothermic), while others release heat (exothermic).

🧊 Our endothermic reactions:
Baking soda + vinegar
Equal parts cabbage juice, vinegar, and water
Citric acid + baking soda in water

🔥 Our exothermic reactions:
Steel wool soaked in vinegar and then exposed to air
Copper sulfate + aluminum foil strips in salt water

Our biggest discovery? The copper sulfate and aluminum foil combination produced the greatest heating effect in our tests—hot enough to warm a small meal! 🤯

But we aren't finished yet! Our next challenge is to determine the right proportions of materials to produce consistent heating. Then, students will put on their engineer hats as they brainstorm, design, build, test, and modify their own flameless heaters. 🛠️

This is science in action! Students are using evidence from their investigations, comparing results, and applying what they've learned about chemical reactions and energy to solve a real-world problem.

As part of the Whole School Challenge given by Unified Champion Schools with Special Olympics, the staff and students here at BMS wore crazy/unique socks to promote Down Syndrome Awareness Month and the fact that "IT IS OKAY TO BE DIFFERENT!"

Our students brought some VERY interesting and creative containers today for “anything but a backpack” day to remind them to not carry drugs!

Mr. Ledbetter’s math classes used a Kagan strategy called Rally Robin to decide with a partner whether different units of measurement were measuring length, volume, or mass/weight. Students then did a card sort activity with table groups to decide which measurement was the best one to describe the size of different given objects.

📊 A little graphing, a little mystery, and lots of learning! 🕵️‍♀️

Our KeyCode students are getting extra practice with the coordinate plane by plotting ordered pairs to reveal mystery pictures. 🎯 Each point helps strengthen the coordinate skills they use to position sprites and create projects in coding! 💻✨

In this activity, students are looking around the room to find the missing pieces that go with different sentence stems to make complex sentences.
